D-28 DT: First "making it mine" touch... Colosi bone pins with tortoise dots |
Lead | |

OK, the original ebony is an interesting touch, but I kinda like white dotted pins on my D-28... Jon sent them along with my K&K, which will probably go in
sometime this week. Played a couple times over the Thanksgiving weekend and it just gets better!!!

That looks nice Dave! If I may ask a question in your thread, what do you think about me putting either a Colosi bone or FWI saddle, and bufflo horn pins on my
SPD-16TR? I like the look of the dark pins on my guitar, and the abalone dots would look good with the other bits of bling on it I think. The current saddle is
the stock one. Since after searching I saw you have used Colosi, and now again, and you know my model of guitar, I thought you would be a good guy to ask.
Thanks in advance for any advice!

Lookin' nice, Tony!
Sun, I tried some buffalo horn pins on my old SP, but didn't like them with the 18 Style tortoise trim as much as the black. The white bone with tortoise inserts were something I didn't try, but would probably look pretty sharp! Bone saddle generally better than synthetic. I've never felt the need to spring for the FWI so no opinion there. Pick on! Dave |

They look excellent, Dave. Is that padauk in the dots, or some kind of 'tortoise-shell' stuff?
I had some Bob Colosi FWI pins in my J-40, which had a double inlay - an ebony ring with abalone in the centre. They cost a shed-load, but they looked great. Wish I had some close-up photos.

I really like Colosi's stuff, and his responsiveness. He's a good source for stuff like that.

I got these through My Favorite Guitars, at the same time I was ordering a pickup. Since I bought the guitar there, Jon gave me a good deal. They are the
"tortoise shell stuff" insert, not padauk.

Nice looking pins. I like them better than the more mahogany tinted "red stuff" in these bone pins the original owner had installed in my '01
HD-28V. BTW: I assume you are keeping your early '70's D-28, right?

Dave, those pins look great.
What I want to know is where's the strap pin gonna go? By the way, I think your Dan T. model is a thing of beauty. Congratulations. Colin |

Colin,
I put the neck end strap pin in the preferred position the evening I got the guitar. I always use the black colored brass pins from Planet Waves these days. The black is less obtrusive and the metal is strong. I won't use a wood or bone strap pin. The ebony end strap pin will be replaced sometime this week when I drill out the end block to install a K&K Pure Western Mini pickup. Then it will have the standard 1/4" jack endpin. Thanks for the favorable bridge pin comments guys! Dave p.s. Carp, ol' '199 ain't going anywhere! These guys will eventually probably even out in backing each other up, but for now the new kid on the block gets the center stage while the '71 is backup.

Thanks Ned! It do go "Boom!!!" in a very pleasant yet authoritative manner.
I'm sure I'd set myself up as some kind of prima donna in talking to Jon about what was and wasn't acceptable to me visually. But he kindly immediately sent me pics as soon as they unpacked this one. Needless to say, it was outbound that same evening. I'm very picky about the Adi Martin uses nowadays, appearance-wise. I am VERY happy with this one Jon sent me! The top is reasonably tight and even for modern Adi standards, and does not have significant compression striping. All to the good in my book! And, of course, the sound... SO nicely balanced, rich and full! |
