I saw this auction posted today where the seller says, "This limited run recently sold out at the Martin factory and no more will be produced." http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=200402159245&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT#ht_500wt_1182 Is this true? It seems like a few stores have them in stock and my local store owner told me he spoke with his Martin Rep who told him the model is not discontinued, however, they only produce about 2 per month so the store needs to get on an allocation list and the guitar will eventually come in. Does anyone here know the real story?

As I understand it, that means that the guitar is not a "Limited Edition" (i.e., one in which Martin establishes the edition size at the outset) and will be produced for as long and in as many numbers as the market will bear. (11/09/09 1:46 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	About 6 months ago I gave one of these a whirl....thought the Italian top would really make a difference..............just didn't do it for me.....not very expressive or open.............and subdued.............could have been that one model....then tried the M-38 and wow...what a difference....a great guitar full of expression!................so ...the old sitka top did the trick............make sure you play before you pay....these 2 models where night and day to me........good luck......

In 2005 Earle moved to New York City and soon found his way to Matt Umanov Guitars. Matt Umanov, who has been matching players with instruments since 1965, guided his new customer in the purchase of a few Martin guitars and along the way introduced him to the M body style, which combines jumbo (0000) size with 000 depth. Umanov knows the body style well; his conversion of an old Martin archtop for David Bromberg served as the pattern for the Martin M (for additional information, see the David Bromberg article in the July 2006 "Sounding Board"). The Martin M quickly became Earle's favorite acoustic, so much so that he now tours with a pair of them. Note that the Jumbo and the 0000 are used simultaneously. CFM IV is credited for taking the M body size and giving it a dreadnought's depth to create Martin's J (Jumbo-M) body size in 1985. Until 1990, J-sized models were given an -M suffix (e.g., J-40M, J-40MBK, J-18M, J-21M) supposedly to show the connection to the M-sized body. I was impressed by the M-21 Steve Earle I played at the Martin Factory just after they were announced, and my wallet was relieved to hear it had a 1-11/16" neck width (I prefer something wider). (11/09/09 6:58 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Well, pulled the trigger on one of these today and I'm hoping she shows up before the end of the week. Got a pretty healthy discount, now we'll have to see how she sounds. I have two guitars with German Spruce tops and another with Engelmann. I'm guessing the Italian will be interesting. Played an M-36 and an M-38 over the weekend and really preferred the 38, though I'm really allergic to the white plastic binding (even on the headstock!). At least the M-21 already has Waverlys on it, so no extra work there. I'm keeping my fingers crossed and I'm anxious to join the ranks of satisfied M owners.

I have quite a few guitars, but this one is kind of "back to basics" for me and I'm very excited about it and hopeful that I'm going to like it a lot.

(11/15/09 12:27 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I'm now officially a member of the "M" club and man am I happy. I have a feeling this body shape could be addictive. The M-21 has great projection, so comfortable to play because of the OM depth and I have no complaints with the 1 11/16" nut. The Waverlys are awesome as expected and the case is kind of retro in a 70's sort of way. Because of a few miniscule dings in the top (which I might have filled in by my luthier) I got an awesome deal from Elderly. The strings that came on it seemed like they were about a hundred years old, but I swapped out some Martin 80/20 Lights that I had around and that made a huge difference. I may try PB's a little later. Thanks for the info here. I'm very pleased with this one.

(11/15/09 12:21 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	this size is a great guitar.....have a 000028H and the newer M-38............both great guitars..........the 38 has a bit more ring and lighter response.............glad you got a good M21....as noted before I was disappointed in the one I got and sent it back..the irony here......the first one I was interested in got a ding before mailing so they switched to another one.......I think you got the one I originally heard before they switched it because of the blemish.........lesson...........if you can play before buying do it......and...........sometimes the blemish has the better sound........enjoy!

Were you ordering from Elderly? I was able to take this one into McCabe's over the weekend where I could play it against an M-38. I heard more bass out of the 38 but I'm very happy with the 21. And quite honestly, I preferred the M-36 they have there to the M-38, so who knows? Christmas is coming...:-) I was really skittish about ordering a "blem" but man am I glad I did. Yes, there are some other imperceptible scratches on her, but WTH, I would have put my own on there anyway. I plan to use this old gal for playing out so I put a Baggs M1A in her today along with a strap button. In other words, she's mine now! I feel like I got a heck of a deal and I'm really fortunate. I took it to a rehearsal today and guys who are much pickier about guitars than I were oohing and aahing over it. Today is a good day!
