It's like impressionism music for me.

One thing I love about music is that there is room for virtually anything. I'm not really much of a Metheny fan, I mean he is a killer musician, but I
personally am kind of ambivelent about his tunes, but that is neither here nor there. This is beautiful stuff.

I don't listen to Pat as much as I used to Chap, but he's just a wonderful, lyrical player. Changed my sound world many years ago, and I've loved
this tune for nearly 25 years! It's a sweet one called 'The First Circle' from the 1984 album 'First Circle'. This live performance from
the 'More Travels' vid is the same arrangement as the one on the original album; give or take the piano solo of course. When the tune really kicks in
at about 2:30, the music alternates between bars of 6/4 and 5/4. Yet it's so nice the complexity of the rhythm just isn't noticable. A very beautiful
piece. Pedro Aznar on voice, acoustic guitar, xylophone, and etc!

This is a really nice clip. I love Metheny's work. I was at Berklee in '73-76 when Metheny was teaching there and I was lucky enough to be able to take lessons from him. Among other things, we would play some of his originals in lessons. Many of the tunes had really strange names like "Farkle Flakes" and "Seemingly Farked". I asked him about the names and he said he wrote them in high school and it was just a goofy word they came up with...kid stuff. When his first album came out I recognized some of these tunes which had been (wisely) renamed. I still have a bunch of his lead sheets. IMHO his composition skills are very underrated. He is the only person I've ever met who I consider a genius. Pat is freakishly good and a very nice guy. - Bruce |

Jamada wrote:Totally agree. As one example, I think Pat's tune, "Letter from Home" is a beautiful piece. I've heard an arrangement of this played by the Los Angeles Guitar Quartet - just gorgeous. |

Pat fans may want to check out:
His keyboardist Lyle Mays' first solo recording, with Bill Frisell on guitar. Also very impressionistic (maybe even more than Metheny's music). Images of Metheny by classical guitarist Jason Vieaux David |

I'm not crazy about the older stuff that has his signature high energy, electric sound (or at least what I associate with Metheny)...
Beyond the Missouri Sky is a lovely acoustic jazz album by Metheny and Charlie Haden on bass... |
