Circa 1915 Lovely lady in long dress with banjo-uke. Notice the very steep steps. Circa 1915 Several women playing ukulele on the beach. Circa 1925. Are they playing Martin ukes? Solitary man on bed strums his ukulele with sheet music about. Circa 1925 Brother and sister play ukulele. He's pretending to play, she's doing all the real work. Flapper wearing short skirt holding uke. Circa 1920. Professional model. Big hat. Small guitar. Winning smile. The ladies loved it in the bar. Circa 1935. Lovely young woman in grass skirt strumming home-made ukulele. Circa 1935 Famous woman gets a ukulele lesson from a famous man. More to come soon!

Apparently it is possible to be business-like and play the uke at the same time. 'What do you mean you traded our machine guns for ukuleles!' This woman appears to be holding a pre-1920 Martin style 3 uke. Very nice! She says: 'I like a man with a gentle strumming style'. Circa 1920. Women who knit their own swimsuits show off ukulele given to them by cousin Clem Grandpa gave me this old ukulele but mum bought me these new shoes. What every man dreams of, a woman with a ukulele and a smile. Notice her technique of using the peghead rather than the fretboard for extra effect. More to follow...

You can sell anything with a uke, apparently? Magazine ad 1950's. Studio shot of pretty girl with uke. She looks familiar? All girl ukulele band. Circa 1920. Wonder what they sounded like? Australian soldiers in WW2 taking a spot of R & R with ukulele. Ukulele Ike comes to the end of the road. Circa 1969. His uke has no strings. Flappers at a bathing costume parade 1920. Can you spot the ukulele? You may have seen this one before but it's a classic. Beach girls with uke and parasol.

Ukuleles do make you feel that way. Little boy holding uku with lots of bling. Could it be a 5K? Sadly, I think not. Viva the revolution! Even communists needed a bit of fun from time to time. Two young girls somewhere in Britian in the middle of last century. Cute youngsters with Martin guitars. Trying hard to impress their parents. Bondi beach Australia. Girls play ukulele while boys look on. Circa 1938. Cool ukulele trio. They look like brothers. Surely the girls were impressed? Colorized photo of woman with hawaiin ukulele. Circa 1925. Looking at it again now, I can't work out if the brothers are sitting or standing? If they're standing are they dancing? Their coats appear to be flying about. Strange. If anyone has vintage uker pic by all means please add them. I'll see if I can dig up a few more.

See more detailed shots below. He is using a plectrum. The instrument appears to be brand new. In this close up, you can see the inlay work, bound fingerboard and koa figuring on the side. An illustration of the Martin 5K ukulele from the 1920's.

'Can I go play now?' The sixties. Hippies, protests, long hair, ukuleles. Is that a Johnny Marvin uke? With aeroplane bridge? I think it might be! Circa 1925. Those sideboards were a good idea. Whatever happened to them? Perfect for sittin' and strummin'. 'Sylvia, you play a tune on the ukulele while I dunk Bill's head in this bowl of water.' After a hard day's work tree-felling, what better way to unwind than plunk a tune on the banjuke? Another all-girl ukulele string band circa 1920. Sisters? Hope you enjoyed the vintage ukers. TC

The position markers are on the side for a left-handed person. I hadn't noticed that. This pic is the cover of an old 'EZ Ukulele Self-Instructor Method' booklet published in 1924. Very observant!

09/24/09 4:03 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	It isn't the same photo or the same instrument. 1. the grain on the lower part of the side is very different. One has a dark stripe and the other has a pale stripe in the wood. 2. the background is different 3. It is taken at a different angle.... NOT mirrored and then re-angled. The amount of fingerboard inlay showing under the strings is different. That can't be achieved by just rotating the angle of the photo a little. Rod

Subtle grain variation isn't a reliable gauge, since these are grainy images that have undergone considerable manipulation by hand. The background certainly in no measure, as that can easily be changed (even before Photoshop!) Here is the "left-handed" 5k, flopped & rotated to approximate the position of the other: And here it is, superimposed...half one, and half the other: Looks like they match up to me!
