Martin sighting in old movie |

"I Shot Jesse James" (1949) was just on TCM and during one scene a bar troubador (Robin Short) was singing the new hit about the dirty coward Bob
Ford, who shot Mr. Howard (Jesse's hideout name). He sang it, unfortunately to Bob Ford... Anyway, he was playing what I'm pretty sure was the old
Martin which the OM-18GE reproduced. It looked like a Martin headstock and body, but had the banjo tuners. He was really playing the guitar in the movie and he
played the entire song, so there are some pretty good looks at the guitar.

Yesterday, I saw an episode of "Maverick" where the saloon singer was playing a brand new D-18. A little anachronistic

In the 1944 Bogart-Bacall movie "To Have and Have Not", in one scene in the club a musician backing up Hoagy Carmichael is playing a Martin tenor
guitar. In another scene, he is playing a Martin D-28.

James Cagney plays his Martin
in the movie "Oklahoma Kid" (1939) of course, the guitar is totally an anachronism. (-)ab |

Re Anachronistic Guitars in Hollywood: It was very jarring to see the current model Martins played by "Johnny Cash" in the smash hit bio-pic a few
years back. They could have at least used vintage series models with open back tuners instead of the mini Schallers.

Of course only guitar players notice or are jarred by such things. Most people just see the shape and recognize it as a guitar. I got a kick out of Marilyn
Monroe hauling that little slothead parlor guitar on a raft in the raging River of No Return.

The Buddy Holly film with Gary Busey, who later cracked his skull while riding a motorcycle, was also guilty of using inacurate guitars. I really enjoyed the
movie, but as everyone knows, Buddy was the original Strat man, not Telecaster, and certainly not a late 70's Tele to boot! It might be a guitar nut thing,
but it was so obvious to even a non guitar person, that it makes me wonder if it would have been a big deal if they used late 70's cars in the movie?

When a guitar shows up on the screen, my wife and daughters turn to me, waiting to hear if it is a Martin.

In the movie "Amanda and the Alien" (please don't ask how I know this), Michael Dorn (before he became Worf) plays a police officer. When
interrogating a coffee-house musician, Dorn's character grabs the guitarist's dreadnaught guitar and asks, "Is this a Martin?". When the
guitarist shakes his head no, Dorn's character smashes the guitar to smithereens.

Groucho Marx plays a real 16" Gibson L-5 while romancing a lady on a boat ride in the movie "Horse Feathers". At the end of the song, he throws
the guitar in the lake..but it's thankfully a prop that goes overboard

In Rio Grande there is a scene were several calvary troopers come to serenade their CO's wife. I remembered them having pearly 12-fret guitars (at least
some effort to have historically accurate ones) and I finally got it on DVD and was able to freeze it and nope, did not look like Martins and they were 14-fret
OM style guitars anyway. Or at least the most visible one was.

In John Ford's Rio Grande, a group of regimental musician's (Sons of the Pioneers) come up and play for John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara. Ken Curtis
(with the Sons of the Pioneers before his Gunsmoke fame) sings a beautiful rendition of "I'll Take You Home Again Kathleen. As he sings, two of the
regimental musicians appear to be playing Martin Guitars.

That was the one I meant, not Rio Bravo. They are not Martins, as I assumed they would be.

In Cool Hand Luke, isn't Harry Dean Stanton (Tramp) playing a D-18 most of the time? I haven't ever rented it to check with freeze frames, and they
don't have enough close-ups.

Todd Stuart Phillips wrote:Well, in Rio Bravo, there is some guitar playing, by Ricky Nelson (not playing a Martin, and although it's a beat-up sothead, I don't imagine any steel-string would be a period guitar). Dean Martin starts the number, so it's definitely a Martin sighting in an old movie...
