(07/02/09 9:58 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tags : None After the recent purchase of a D-18CW with vintage sunburst, I've gotten some new and definate ideas on tone woods. Red Spruce will definately be the top of choice in future purchases. This is my 1st and I'm really loving it. I'm not sure what quilted mahogany has that's different from the standard mahogany used, but what ever it is, it's got it. Thank goodness, I haven't played a GE yet that compares. I can't imagine being any happier with the sound of the D-18A. I've played a few and loved them all but without an A-B comparison, I think it would be a toss up on which would win out. This guitar got me thinking about the quilted mahogany. I know next to nothing about it, so I have some questions. Is it something special (i.e. a figure of sorts) or just another way of sawing the wood? Is it rare? and is it from the same species as other mahogany that Martin uses? Is there some general accepted rule that it's superior in tone to regular mahogany, or is just that I personnally like this particular guitar a lot? Thanks! k

Just to clarify: Quilted figure shows best when the wood is slab cut, but the cutting direction is just one factor. The wood must have the figure to start with. The same is true with birdseye maple. Quilted mahogany is so special that it was virtually unknown before 'the tree' was discovered. But as large as that log was, I cannot imagine all of the quilted mahogany that has appeared on the market came from that one tree. John

So if I'm getting this right, quilted mahogany is a fairly recent discovery? I don't recall ever seeing it on antique furniture or anything. If I did, I mistook it for something else. What can you tell us about "the tree". Did Martin an exclusive on the log? k

I may have that issue somewhere. I have all of Tauntons FHB mags, 200+ issues. At some point I gave up FWW when my career took a definate path toward homebuilding. Now that I'm older, and my body is nearly worn out, I wish I had stayed with wood working and learned more about wood, wood working, and lutherie. k

The unusual thing about The Tree is the dark line around the blisters. None other I've seen has had that. On the other hand, I have some wood that was sold by Allied as Paisley Mahogany which has a very different character, also very interesting and unusual, but has in common the dark line thing. I have wwondered if they are related. It also has in common an unusual hardness and lack of porosity.

If I still own it come HGF, it will be under my table. I have another set of this stuff, but it is spoken for at the moment. Since I allow my customers to change their mind up to build time, this could change. As Howard mentioned, I also have a single set of something far more special yet (unspoken for). There is some really interesting Mahogany in the world.
