Soon to be discontinued... |

Any opinions? A dealer friend of mine tells me that Martin's about to discontinue a model; and that they will be offering maybe two more of them before
halting production...
Does that increase the value of said model? Or add value to the last two being offered? |

It depends. If they're discontinuing a model because of slow sales (can't think of an example) value/desirability will likely be unaffected. If
they're discontinuing a model due to lack of material (BRW GE's or MRW Marquis for example) value/desirability is likely to increase - how fast and to
what extent is anybody's guess.

I have a hard time believing they sell enough MC12-41 Richie Samboras to make that one worthwhile.
Seriously, though... I think there was talk of the Madagascar models being discontinued because of availability... and the 000-18GE now has a Marquis counterpart (which leaves off Braz rosewood trim bits and the Genuine Mahogany neck...). So, the 000-18GE could be a chopping-block possibility. (Although, on a related note, I don't see a D-18 Marquis... not sure why, unless it's just a matter of time.) - Chris 2006 000-18GE | 2001 000-15S | 2008 CEO-4R | 2006 Felix II | 1979 Silver Anniv. Isnt Martin about to discontinue the complete range of Dreadnaughts due to the huge amount of tonewood used? There will be a last run with 5-part-tops and 7 or
8-part backs.
Instead of the Dreadnaughts the production and sale of ukeleles and 00-12 slotheads will be immensely pushed in the near future: Watch out for the NAMM-news *scnr again* Frank forum intro p.54 or somewhere nearby. [Guild F30 * C.F. Martin 0-16NY * Steward parlor ~ 1880 * 000.28RC]

Funny how the usual reason for a model being discontinued is slow sales, or in other words, lack of consumer desirability. Once that undesirable model is
discontinued, however, nearly every dealer will try to hold on to their price point and resist discounting that model because it is now "scarce" and
more desirable.

This is quite similar to something I've wondered for a while: when Martin does decide to end a line or model, is there an announcement of sorts,
or is it just no longer in their catalog? Guesses and rumors aside, if they did make an "official" announcement, I'd think it'd have a
possible negative effect by creating a somewhat limited edition in some cases.

The only discontinued model that comes to mind right now is the OM-35. I had one for a while, but traded it away (maybe not such a great move). In any event,
I have seen a few trade here in buy and sell. No bump up in price. They sell for an "average" used guitar price.
It is difficult to answer your question due to the various reasons for halting production. Is seems be done "quietly" with the price disappearing first, then it moves off the current model website. Jim D |

Thanks. Lots of good info here, as always.
I was wondering if I couldn't justify picking up a new guitar as an "investment." Any other married guys here? |

@Glenben: married? - I am: happily married (more or less, most time: more) since 1975 - hoping that "our model" will not be discontinued too soon.
Although I had quiet a couple of guitars (four Blazers when they were still unknown in the 70ies and 80ies, two left with my sons, none with me @jscio: Keep on talking - its the right story anyway (at least for me). I tell my wife that my guitars are an investment. She doesn't believe it for one minute.
If I found out that a guitar that I really liked and wanted was going to be discontinued I might buy one.

Could be wrong but I believe that the Marquis Madagascar models (D and OM) have been discontinued. I don't know if this is due to a shortage of Madagascar,
or if Martin is electing to reserve this wood for special models.

Daniel... both HAVE already been discontinued.
Now theres a couple that would make good investments if they can be found in the stores. Watch for the OMC Juber Madagascar too folks. |

Oh, I think I got one of the last OM-28 Marquis Madagascar models! Not as nice as a certain Juber, but nice enough. Sounds great. Pictures to follow in a
different thread.

And all this hogwash about guitars not being investments... give me a break! Everything is an investment, in some form or another!
Is it a good idea? Probably not. But neither is it to answer your own questions. At least, that's what the leprechauns tell me. So what model is it anyway to which you refer? Cheers, Ben |

I'll add that slow sales, especially if less than long term, do not necessarily equate lack of consumer desirability. I believe it's more complex than that and I think models tend to get discontinued too quickly. Don't ask me to prove it, though. Regarding Madagascar rosewood Marquis guitars, it doesn't surprise me. In fact, I was a little surprised Martin introduced them in the first place. Henk |
