RH & String Pitch Change |

This is more of a comment of a realization rather than a question, so please excuse me. Here in Southeast Michigan we're experiencing an unusually high
level of humidity in the air. Currently it's averaging about 85%. I've seen many discussions here about how heavy humidity can "un-tune" a
guitar, and I've seen it happen a little now and again here at home. But just now I picked up my '55 00-17 which has been sitting out on a stand for
about two days. One strum and I could tell it wasn't close, so I clamped on a tuner. Every string was almost exactly a 1/2 step higher. I've never seen
such a dramatic change in pitch in such a short span of time, and all due to weather. Ya learn somethin' new every day.

Wow! I lived in Florida for nine years and constantly took guitars to outdoors festivals and back into air conditioning and never experienced anything like
that! Florida humidity was often in the nineties in the long summers.

Strangely, it happened again later last night. My formica Martin always sits out and was hanging in our bedroom. I grabbed it to run a few scales before going
to sleep. Again it was nearly a full 1/2 step high. Do you think they know were in Michigan and they're just messing w/me?

That IS bizarre! I do thing the guitar gods are messing around with you. To me it doesn't make sense that humidity could ever effect a Formica guitar.
I'm totally clueless. (Which is not the first time . . . . )

The story gets stranger: last night I pulled my '66 00-18 out of it's case to goof around. It hasn't been out for maybe two weeks. It was nearly in
perfect tune. How....why....

More likely to be temperature. If it had been tuned on a warmer day it could easily be up 1/2 tone on a cold day.
