I've got half a hankerin' for a 1938 "birthday guitar" I know that an 18 series, especially a D size, is out of my hankerin' range but
maybe a 17 series something or other would do it. Lots of late 20's, other 30's and 40's on up, but 1938 seems to be rare. According to Longworth,
CF Martin was in business that year but I'll be damned if I see any around for sale, maybe they were all too wonderful. I know, I know,---I'm just too
old! Fog

I don't know Fog, maybe it's just they didn't come up when you were looking. And you're not old; you're vintage........

The Longworth figures indicate fairly healthy production numbers, there were 309 D18 for instance (though 426 in '37 and 475 in '39).
There were also 9 D45's made |

perhaps they had overstock in 37 so cut back a bit to catch up.
Good luck in your search. That sounds SO cool. Wayne Henderson House Concert

1938 was still the Depression. Not a lot of folks were buying expensive Martin (or Gibson) guitars in those days. I have a 1938 Kalamazoo, if you are
interested. Gibson even made wooden toys during the depression, to bring in a few dollars.

Am currently sniffing around an arch top. Kind of out of my zone but if the price gets right I could pull the trigger and learn a jazz chord or two along with
my various other real or imagined fingerings. What the hell, we're 70+ years old, maybe a chorus or two of "Who's Sorry Now".

Begone Beelzebub, (You too Fingerstyle2), those DO look tasty, might look into them a bit deeper! If I get a "birth year guitar" maybe I could go
looking for a high school graduation, (1956), model, followed by early 60's college one too! Yes, this GAS thing has many tentacles!
I fought the war (U.S. Army) out in APG and Frederick, Maryland 1963-65, why the hell didn't I buy one while I was in that hot bed of bluegrass? Maybe $100/month had something to do with it. Fog |

Alright, alright, no more Mr Nice Guy, I've got me a kick axx 1938 Martin semi-cherry C-1 (The carved top one) archtop heading my way. Maybe I'll learn
a bunch of jazz and bossa nova stuff----in my dreams anyway.
How come I always buy on the week-ends when the banks are closed etc. I'll mail the check on Monday and it'lll get there on Wednesday, they'll ship on Thursday and then the week-end raises it's ugly head once again! Not that I need a guitar to pass the time but the one in the pipe-line is THE one that will make a difference in my guitar playing life but I'm sure I don't have to explain to youse guys. Fog |

Congrats Fog! I am holding down my GAS attacks with my recent Custom, but if ever I did - that's the guitar I'd want.

I'm now in the phantom Martin guitar nether-land "the check is in the mail" (It really is!) and I have NO guitar-----yet! Who says we aren't
into fore play, well guitar acquiring anyway. The new world of arch top Martins (1938, C-1 no less!), and maybe a different genre and songs, is about to begin.

Fog,
Way back in the early 1990's, I met a guy in the Nashville area that had a whole slew of 1938 Martin guitars and was buying more. He was born in 1938 and bought everything he could find. I have never seen such a fine display and accumulation of 1938 Martin guitars...... He had everything from the low end models up to the 45's..... nice collection....... lost touch with him so don't know what ever happened..... maybe that's why there so hard to find.... he started buying them back in the 1970's. Best of luck in your search.............. Jazz

This is what I found on gbase.com http://www.gbase.com/Stores/Gear/GearList.aspx?GS=Y&SF0=12&SD0=1&SF1=8&SD1=1&FY=1938&LY=1938&Keyword=Martin

Thanks mcn7777, I bought one of those, the 1938 C-1 at the bottom of the list. Been looking for an original pick guard and was told by a convertor that the
reason so many old arch tops don't have a pick guard is they turn brittle with no support like a flattop. So it looks like I've got to make a new one
out of modern materials. Another UMGFer is sending me a tracing so it'll be authentic looking.
