Well, I got my first Martin just a short while ago - an HPL 000X1. I have always wanted a Martin, both for the traditional Martin sound and also to own the history behind the sound. As budget is always tight around this household, the used 000X1 fit the bill perfectly at the time. Ok, I also own an all solid wood Johnson Carolina II JO-26. When I got the 000X1, it was all I played to get to know it and the Carolina stayed in its case. I guess it's a matter of how ears adapt to what we are playing, but just today I brought the Carolina out of its case in fear of neglect and was amazed how good this guitar sounds compared to the 000X1. The Carolina had much more sustain, more complex individual notes, more depth to its tone, and just an overall 3-dimensonal sound whereas the 000X1 has a more 2-dimensional sound. Is this all due to the solid back and sides vs. the laminated back and sides? Perhaps an all solid Martin is more in the near future than I thought?... Don't get me wrong, I still very much like the 000X1, but it seems to be more of a strummer for singing with whereas the Carolina seems to be more a solo instrument. Thanks.
