07/31/10 3:08 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Tags : strings, parlor, slide i wasnt sure if this question ought to go here or in the tech. section, so Mods,, you can move it if you like i use my 2-17 for a combination of slide & fretting & currently am using pb lights. 08/01/10 7:48 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I have used steel flatwounds on my 00-17 and it sounded sort of compressed. Not as open as I'd like. Like you, I wanted to see if a different sort of string would facilitate sliding more efficiently, it did not to my ear/feel, but some players like 'em. Neal's YouTube (fixed)

08/01/10 5:32 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Older Parlor probably some cheaper PB. If the action was pretty low I'd use medium if I felt it could handle it. Probably not the go-to guy string-wise, if you mean by coated something like Elixers, used 'em, but pretty much the same as PB or reg. I noticed no advantage slide-wise, only durability. BTW, I'm not sure now if the flatwounds were nickel or steel..... oops. SO, Let's ask the group that follows this section-- what would you guys use on an older parlor for some fingerpicking and a bit of slide? Acoustic. Also, I didn't really notice any difference in "slide interference" between the flatwound/reg. I think if you damp the strings behind the slide, that's what you're aiming for. 08/01/10 9:53 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	i was using Marquis extra lts on it & keeping it in standard tuning. now it sports lights (.010) & unless its in open G or D, i keep it tuned down a whole step. action is great (to me) for what i use it for--just under 1/8" at the 12'th fret. if it wasnt so lightly built & wearing scalloped X-bracing i probably would experiement with mediums, but she's my pride & joy & take her outside my home on only very few occasions. so...the question is out: suggestions & experiences for/with strings for slide on old insts... or something '30 2-17, '96 Guild DV-6

08/02/10 7:11 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Here is a neat string tension calculator - http://www.bangzero.org/stringtension/ When I'm swapping strings around I use this to understand what effect my change will have on overall tension. Even if it isn't precise ( I'm not saying it isn't ) I can use it to identify trends. So you could plug in your scale length, tuning and current gauges to know what tension you've been using that works and hasn't harmed your guitar in Open G, and then play around with other gauges and compare. I like to compare my changes against what shipped on the guitar, and I try to stay under that overall tension. In my case, it's a National tricone that shipped with John Pearse 13's in standard tuning, so I compare against that. My theory is that I'll stay within the design spec by doing this. -John -------------------------------------------------- I need a blues handle. 10/17/10 11:51 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	howdy! i think a lot depends on the guitar. older, ladder braced guitars--the ones before string technology and choices in metals increased--sound best with just steel strrings. using them will get you closer to the sound the old players had, if that is what you are looking for. when i use an instrument for a bottleneck guitar i keep it in a drop tuning, usually g or d, and prefer medium guage strings. if i think the guitar won't stand up to a medium guage set i always change out at least the first string and sometimes the second string to a heavier guage. much better tone and sustain that way; less of that really thin and whiny sound and the strings flop around less. laurenl
