In most cases, having a good instrument encourages playing and practicing. While there is some sort of moral satisfaction among musicians telling about how they learned on 3 strings tied to a broom handle, I used to tell my students to get as good an instrument as they could afford, because what they save by buying a $39 guitar will be money. What they will lose is the satisfaction of having an instrument that responds to you as a player. John

His repertoire is currently a lot of riffy single line stuff, having starting out on the electric, and being a fiddle player, but the plan now is to head into strumming chords, especially now with the 3/4 size, and that lovely martin sound!
