He is absolutely one of my favorite guitar players, especially his early work up to the mid 70s or so. (11/19/09 11:28 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I met Fahey briefly when we both lived in Oregon. Wonderful, wonderful musician. Excellent guitarist and, frankly, a way weird guy. I love his music. He wasn't afraid to take chances and go far beyond what people commonly think of as 'acoustic guitar playing'. (11/19/09 1:28 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	The Bacon & Day is one of the grail guitars for me. I remember a sad story of it being destroyed and then being salvaged. Does anyone know the details? It was a Recording King. Were they made by Bacon & Day? I honestly don't know. John smashed it by repeatedly jumping on it. The impetus was an argument with his then girlfriend. It sat in a larger paper bag under the late John Zender's work bench @ McCabes Guitar Shop for many years. John would glue a few splinters back together every now and then but never finished the job. He took the guitar in with the provision that nobody connected with John ever ask him about progress or finish date. Eventually, it was shipped to someone else who promised to make it a priority. Since they mainly made banjos, it is very difficult to find further details on their guitars, in particular this one and its whereabouts. Whether this was done for the composition or it was just a mistake is unknown like the B & D whereabouts. I'm sure someone knows the answer to both. Richard

(11/20/09 5:45 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	at least in the album photo, and it's been flipped, now I know whay it seemed a little off, thanks. There's that guitar then the one on Norman's Whiskey Before Breakfast and the 12 fret D28 picture on Rising Fawn I think, Tony with the Clarence guitar on his first solo record with the '70s shirt. Those are my 4 favorite album covers to drool over. I'd love to read a description of how that B&D sounded or sounds today, on the record it is like an angel but the tunings are so different it's a little hard to compare to others played in standard tunings. John Fahey always has seemed to have sprung from the ground (or somewhere) as a complete original, a very rare quality. I think I'll put Requium on tonight and stare at the cover for another hour or so, many fond memories of that record, thanks for the post, Kerry

I wish I still had them... He seemed to jump around from topic to topic as if his brain was moving faster than he could write... if that makes any sense. A conversation about Skip James would suddenly switch to talking about transubstantiation and then to cathedrals in England... I almost got fired for spending too much time emailing back and forth with him instead of doing my job at work! Having seen that yesterday, it started me wondering if Rick ever got to play Fahey's guitar before it was damaged. I wonder how different it sounded after it was repaired. I picked up The Transfiguration of Blind Joe Death as a high school kid and was completely mesmerized by it. I still play a handful of songs from that recording. For several excellent articles either about Fahey or featuring Fahey, take a look through this search list from the Washington City Paper: Fahey City Paper Search. Fahey was born and raised in the DC area and got pretty good coverage by the City Paper. David
