gags - for economy's sake or preservation's sake, in recent years Martin has made better use of the billets of wood they buy, and by cutting narrower
widths of Mahogany for necks they get more necks per billet and less wasted wood. However this narrower cut isn't quite wide enough for the headstock, so
they glue small pieces on each side - wings. They be the devil around here for some people ..... lol

From the aforementioned FAQ:
Wings are another hot topic that many do not understand. Wings are simple to explain and pictures will be provided at the bottom of this post. Neck blocks come in different sizes. Larger blocks allow the neck to be built with out the need for wings. Smaller blocks, however, are simply not wide enough, so Wings are added to the headstock. Wings are the addition of small pieces of wood that makes the neck block wide enough. The wings are only visible from the back, and have no effect on tone. As Mahogany supplies continue to dwindle, the use of wings will become more and more prevalent. Scooter |

Thats taking the micky some what is it not? I have seen these on some Gibson electrics. I guess Martin will have to change the spec from all solid neck to neck with wings!

My brothers wife asked me to help pick out a Martin for my brothers birthday. We picked out a beautiful 000-15, factory fresh, all hog. He got it today and
played for hours. Hopefully this will inspire him to play more, he is really a great player.

Well, I spent a few weeks (off and on) going through this entire
thread. It was fun to see GAS develop and ignite and other members come and go. I'm amazed at all the modifications that have been done, but completely understand the desire to experiment with tone. And what happened to Bill. I have to say thanks to ol' 12 thumbs for all of the effort. My own story: I've been lurking for years off and on. In the last month I sold an HD-28 that I've had since 2002. I'm mainly a fiddle player and mostly gig on that and mando. Guitar is just a side project and comes and goes for me, mostly flatpickin'. In 2004, I bought my wife a 00-15. She learned a few chords, but lost interest. My daughters also messed around with it and still do at times. I always enjoyed the 15 and actually spent more time with it than my 28. I've recently been spending more and more time with the 00-15 (without the guilt of the 28 sitting in the case) and I have to say this is a very fine guitar. It just sings with a light touch of the pick (or finger style) ... just an all-around great guitar. Don't think I could ever let this one go. It was insanely inexpensive for the tone it delivers. Completely un-modified, I'm very happy with it. UMGF is a great forum! Brian, in sunny Portland Oregon |

Put me down as a proud D-15 owner. I recently picked-up a '01 all hog in very good condition with great tone and vibe. I'm really enjoying this brown
beauty what a great value! I'm thinking of doing a few mods down the road maybe pins, saddle, tuners. Any recommendations for my D-15 would appreciated.

Never had a D-15, but I've had a D-15S, 000-15 and a 5-15 (either in addition or prior to the 000-15S I currently have)...
Always found that a bone saddle with ebony pins makes me the happiest. All except for on the 000-15, the first 15 series I ever had. Went back to tusq on that one, and it sounded great. Not sure why, but every guitar is different. Might also have been I never got the replacement saddle height right on it. Sold it before I really had more time to tinker. Good luck, and enjoy! Played a DSM & DSR at GC last Sat.(12/5/09). I liked the DSM much better (also $100 cheaper...). I play pretty much big open bluegrass rhythm chords w/
a little Neil Young banging. It just felt so good in my hands, and the sound!!!
Not much is publicized about the interior of these models. What is the bracing, etc.? Problem, I don't want to buy from GC/MF. |

I'm in this thread quite a ways back. I listed a 000-15s (which has long been sold) and a J12-15 which I still enjoy. Now with the introduction of the new 15M's and the customs spawning from the 2 new stock models, I'm sure we will be adding to the 15 series club. I will be adding a custom 000c-15sM 12 fret cutaway. Can't wait!
