(11/02/09 11:05 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Tags : None I've got 4 Martins, a D-42 Peter Frampton, D-28 Marquis, America's Guitar (D-28MM) and a 000-28EC. I like all of them but tend to favor the bigger nut and longer scale. They are all nearly mint and I'm gong nuts trying to not get any marks on them. It's a pain to take one on a trip. It's no fun so I want to find a player's dread with a big nut that sounds and plays good. I'd like it to have the volute headstock. What should I be looking for that is least costly that I can bang around and not worry? Thanks Hank

I have a D-28M myself, and while I'd never put it harm's way, I am not precious about it. I travel with it frequently, and have had good luck, though I'm about to get a Calton. Pick your favorite one and play it! That's what they're for. You don't need another guitar, you just need to stop being afraid about the ones you have. Go ahead and bang around with your Marquis, it's probably the best one anyway. (OK, I might be biased) To answer your question directly - "What should I be looking for that is least costly that I can bang around and not worry?" You can get a D-28 for short money, it's a buyer's market these days. (If it were me, I'd still rather have the Marquis with me)

The aren't always easy to find but definitely worth the search. I just got that D-18 back yesterday from a neck set; man can it sing. My most used guitars are a D-28GE (stock except for a Greven guard) and a 2005 D-18A (stock except for Waverly tuners). The GE is really clean, but I still take it to festivals and camping. The 2005 Authentic is part of the very small first year production, and it would seem like a good idea to keep it as clean as possible, but I don't care to do that. It has all sorts of very minor wear, not all of it by me since I bought it used. There's lot's of little scratches on the headstock from string changes, a few marks on the lower back from jeans rivets or buttons, a very light cloth imprint pattern on the back that was there when I got it, and a small spot of finish wear on the pick guard. (I'm bad about "posting" my pinky and ring fingers when I pick - do it on mandolin too.) All of these could be fixed by buffing or other minor finish repairs and it would look new. I've chosen not to do any of that because I just don't care. It's a guitar than I enjoy playing and I expect it to look like it. You have to decide how you are going to get the most enjoyment out of your guitars - by playing them or keeping them in mint condition. You can tell which way I lean. Having said all that, you can find D-18GE's for under $2K if you shop carefully. There's no way to get more guitar for less money, especially if you want red spruce and a 1 3/4" neck. Of course the danger is that you bond with the "beater" and the others sit idle. Todd

Hank, I've got an America's, a D-18A, and a Running Dog Minijumbo, all of which I bought new, and all of which I have gigged with and shall do so in the future. Right after I bought it, I took the America's with me to Nazfest and played it in the lounge with 457 other guitars in close proximity. I'm careful, but I don't worry. (OTOH, I have yet to take the OM-45 Marquis out of the house.) Maybe you just think about not banging it around... Paul I may be wrong, but I'm not far from it...

I've become a minimalist with a 6 year old 00-15, a well played OM-18V with many small scratches and a 1998 D-28 with scratches, a few dents and a mismatched back. It's a pleasure to play them anywhere including picnics, birthdays, family reunions etc.. My friends nd neighbors bring 40's Gibsons and 50's Martins and we don't sit around and wring our hands over possible dings, etc..It's a better, stress free atmosphere for all. Get you a beat up Martin or Gibson and enjoy.

Get yourself a spotless Brazilian dread (an excellent condition D-28GE maybe) and play the Marquis. I have one and it's a KILLER guitar....

I have no inexpensive Martins, my GE, America's Guitar, 000-42M Clapton (moved on), D-28 Marquis have all seen stage time. When I got my OM-45 Tazmanian Blackwood a few months back I though about not gigging with it for about 2 minutes, got it on a Saturday morning and it was on stage that night, actually kind of cool because it was a new venue and the first guitar ever played there was the Taz. Obvioulsy there are considerations with weather and temperature, but I wouldn't know what to do with a beater. If you want to travel with a good guitar get a good case or double case and carry on if at all possible. Play your best, anyway that's my attitude.... But it still got some, I had them repaired, and now I don't park so far away.... (11/03/09 1:23 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	as far as I'm concerned you're welcome to your fairly low threshold of pain for scratches, so to answer your question, the GE has already been mentioned. My take-out Martin is a CEO5 with 1 3/4 nut, and yes I have guitars I won't take out anymore. If you're going down this road, as I have, why stop there, you probably need to add a land travel guitar (mine is a Guild D 50) plus you need a beach guitar (say Tacoma D09) plus you need an air travel/true beach guitar (laminated Yam). So now you're set, have a big ole time, Kerry
