(11/01/09 11:24 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Tags : None I started a thread in the tech forum, but it was suggested I post a pic here in the log cabin. For me, the easiest way to spot Red Spruce was wide grain (in newer guitars anyway). I just had my D-28 Marquis re-topped at Martin, and the grain is much tighter than the old top, or any I have seen. Is there another way to confirm red spruce by looking at it? (11/02/09 12:09 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I'm not sure how to answer, but fom the guitars I've seen, it looke like Red Spruce to me. The dark streaks to me are a dead giveaway. Red Spruce varies a lot. I've seen wide and narrow grain tops. I'm sure Martin would replace a top on that guitar model with the same type as came on it. That's a very nice top by the way. May I ask why you had to have it retopped? It should be a relatively newish guitar. But I'm a little concerned about the sound. It DOES sound good, but it was more powerful before - more bass and more headroom. I am hoping that it opens up with time, if I can get the old sound with the new looks, it would be just about perfect.

Thanks for the comments guys. Is "very stiff" a good thing? Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I thought "flexible" was a good thing. I'm definitely going to give it time, but like many folks, I suppose I can be impatient to get to "the good part".

It's a beautiful guitar and I would certainly trust John Arnold's assessment of the top. Going on looks alone, I prefer tops that look like yours. After some playing time, I bet it will be killer! k

I might try lights, nothing is against the rules. What I am looking for is the "cannon". Power and headroom is what I like. I'm not much a player of talent or finesse, so I tend to boomer guitars. That said, I'll give some lights a try to see if they help. Thanks for the suggestion.

(11/03/09 1:51 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Well reason I say that is a friend recently lowered the action on another of our friend's Martin dred and he put on extra lights.... it had a huge sound. I've always thought I could only get that sound out of mediums - and that's all I buy. Who knows... strings are cheap; try a set of lights and see what they do until that top opens a bit. Wosrt case, you're out a few bucks.
