I'm really undecided on what to use as the neck pickup... I'm leaning toward a Tele or Strat neck pickup, but a humbucker could be nice. Or a P-90... I'd be interested in reading some opinions!

What is a good neck pickup to go with a Rickenbacker in the bridge? |

I have an electric guitar project that I'm working on.... It is a Fender-esque solid body and it will have a Rickenbacker pickup in the bridge-- the black
hi-gain version from the late 80's, not the vintage toaster top.

I am currently smitten with the Fralin high-output DeArmond-style pickups. Gorgeous neck position tones.

Since you've got a high gain pickup at the bridge you would probably want something that has close to the same amount of power in the neck position. My
tastes would lean towards a P-90, but I would wonder about the volume difference. A hot humbucker in the bridge is going to be pretty loud. If you have a
weaker pickup in the neck you will hear a definite volume drop when you switch to the neck position.
That Ricky is what? Maybe 8k ohms or so? Maybe as high as 10 -11k if it is marketed as 'high gain'. A TV Jones Gretsch copy Classic (which would look way cool) is rated at 4.0k. The Classic Plus is rated at 7.8k. Most Strat and Tele pups are right around 6.0k. A good Alnico 'bucker from Seymour Duncan or DeArmond would probably be a good match. What kind of tone are you looking for in a neck pickup? Ricky pups are pretty bright so maybe a darker sound, like a Duncan Pearly Gates at the neck might give you a good balance of tone and output level. Messing around with different pickups is one of the really fun aspects of building your own electric. Rev George |

Thanks for the advice, guys! I actually have a couple of neck pickups waiting to be used-- a GFS Dream 90 (a P-90 clone which looks like the Ric pu) and a
Duncan '59, so sounds like I won't have to do any shopping.
