I am excited and can't wait to receive it. By the way, it is my first Martin with some pearl. Maybe the beginning of another addiction? I hope not.

D-18 Clarence White on its way to me! |
Lead | |
|
I am thrilled to report that #116 D-18 Clarence White will soon be on its way to me! I feel very lucky and fortunate that I have been able to work out a trade
with a fellow guitar pal and past UMGFer from around my ways for this sweet guitar. I have always longed for one, especially since I let go my D-18GE a couple
of years ago. Since then I missed the combination of red spruce / mahogany in a Martin dread. Paired with the tasty appointments of this model, especially the
quilted hog, this should make for a great guitar.
I am excited and can't wait to receive it. By the way, it is my first Martin with some pearl. Maybe the beginning of another addiction? I hope not. Some images courtesy of the skilled photographing seller:

Nils - I predict you'll soon forget all about the D-18GE. Nice score on the Clarence. It's a dandy.
nice back side too....the guitar, of course. Jim (#23 D-18CW) |

Congratulations!! You are going to love it. Won't even care about the abalone (it is only the soundhole ring, after all). Nice herringbone grain on
yours, too. The back on mine (on the left below) is a little less organized, but still easy on the eyes...
Again, congratulations!!

I have a D-28CW, but have never played a D-18 version. Looks great, and I bet it sounds great, too.

Thanks, guys. I can't wait to receive it and I feel very fortunate.
I am wondering how different it will sound and feel compared to my previous D-18GE. Should be in the same league, I would imagine. And the pearl rosette does not bother me the least, to the contrary! Nils

I'm not good at describing sound/tone and A/B differences, but after playing my D-18CW for a few months, I sold the best sounding D-18GE I had ever
played/owned.
I suspect you'll like the Clarence, a lot. |

That is exactly what the seller reported, it apparently had the edge over some great D-18GE's, and that's a guitar which is difficult to beat for my
personal taste.
I am pretty sure that I will like it a lot. Nils

It doesn't look like it has the large sound hole, I'm I missing something? Just curious.

It does not have the large soundhole. Only the D-28CW has this larger soundhole. But, I had the same thought initially for some reason when I was offered this
guitar. For some reason we associate Clarence White with the large soundhole.
Yes, I did receive it - sorry for not posting my review earlier, but my weekend was occupied with playing this amazing guitar. Visually, it is everything I would want in a guitar, extremely tight and even-grained Adirondack, with a great amount of red striping which in person is even more ovbious than in the pictures I posted. The new hand-made pickguard does it justice as well. The mahogani back has really nice "herringbone-patterned" quilting, as Tony described it. Much nicer and more regular than my previous D-18DC with the same wood. I am not an expert of describing sound, but it is everything I had wished for. It is everything a great D-18GE has, and then some extra sparkle on top of that. I would say it has the attack, the crispness and clarity of a D-18GE, it will hold up to hard flatpicking without compromise, but it has an added silkiness to its tone, if that makes any sense. In any case, I am really happy with it and think it will only sound better over the years to come. For anyone looking at one of these, I can highly recommend them! Nils

Nils,
Nicely worded review. Glad you like it!! Even happier to hear you find it has a little something extra for your ears over and above the D-18GE (it is not all eye-candy, although there certainly is plenty of that). I remember back to when this model came out there was a lot of resistance to it. A number of folks complained that the published specs of the D-18CW didn't really approximate Clarence White's actual D-18, but I'm very happy with the resulting instrument. I bet Clarence would dig it, too.

My D-18CW is one of the finest guitars I've owned or played. My other guitars are being neglected and have been for about 4 or 5 months now. Every time I
find myself playing it, I ask myself how long this crush is gonna last.

That's one guitar I've been thinking impure thoughts about for years! A looker with a great voice. Those little quilted numbers always gave me the
shivers, and I've played a few that left me dazed and confused!

Congratulations on finding this gem of a guitar. Love that quilt back, and I think the single-ring rosette looks elegant.
