Tough to be too hard on a guy when one realizes he's the enabler. Kinda like getting mad about all the drugs coming through Mexico while smokin a big fat spleef. max |

Inc's a really respected magazine amongst business leaders. Chris seems awfully humble to me and probably considered it more as an honor than a marketing opportunity. Sometimes it's hard to imagine folks like Chris as just real people. He's just a normal everyday guy. And I always have to laugh when folks use marketing and Martin in the same breath. I've met a few owners/creative directors of the agencies that have worked on guitars and strings. Have even approached Dick Boak about projects, myself. Martin, by any standards, is really, really conservative when it comes to advertising. They are in an enviable (and tough) position of steering a very powerful brand. Much to advertising agencies' dismay, they don't need to do a ton of consumer advertising. Just ask the Stevenson Group, Tierny, and Kelly Michener (Cimbrian). I think Martin has found a great mix between growth and protecting the classic brand. I know each of these agencies believes they could and should be doing more. Martin, rightly, or wrongly, keeps the reigns on them. When folks talk about marketing in this context, they're really referring to advertising. Marketing refers to the entire process of bringing a product or service to market -- from indentifying demand, design, execution, distribution, support, and advertising. Claire's inclusion in Inc. has very little relavence to the marketing chain. So if we're using this as an example of feeding the Martin advertising/PR machine it's kinda laughable to folks who know the people involved and the company. Just my attempt to balance the perspectives that naturally take place on a very impersonable communication platform like a forum. Wasn't trying to single you out oldtimey. Lots of people subscribe to the same opinion as yours. I just don't see it from my perspective - which, of course, is just my own and not universal -- even if sometimes my writing doesn't reflect it. max

...her relentless use as a marketing tool, I find cheesy and inappropriate.Nah. I see a proud and hopeful father, who also happens to be the respectful keeper of a great American tradition. |

It's been a family business for 176 years. Claire is family. I see no problem here.
