Christian, that's a lovely close-up of your L-2. Would you mind sharing a pic of the entire guitar so that folks can see one that has suffered fewer of the ravages of time than mine?John and Dario,

Thanks, Christian! Beautiful guitar.
I'd like to add one more to our heap of L-2s. This one belongs to UMGFer MrCharlie5/Lynn. It's stunning! Here is what these L-2s looked like when they shipped out of Kalamazoo in 1931: Thanks for sharing this one with us, Lynn!

Congrats John, and everyone else that owns one of these wonderful old things!
My favorite old Gibson flat top. I do get a pain in my heart when I see these though....I missed a chance to buy one by about 5 minutes a few years ago.....it sounded great and was nicely preserved too. She who hesitates loses..... ziz |

The only Gibson catalog I've seen with the L-2 in close to this configuration says they are 14 frets and Brazilian RW back and sides. Has anyone seen one
like that?

The 1929 catalog shows a "new" model L2. It pictures a guitar with a 13 fret neck short bridge (as seen on some small body Nick Lucas guitars). The
description says it is a 14 fret guitar!
The 1932 catalog pictures what looks to be a standard Argentine grey 12 fret mahogany guitar, but describes a 14 fret guitar with rosewood body and natural finish. catalogs at acousticmusic.org http://www.acousticmusic....talogs-sp-87.html#Gibson I have pictures of a 14 fret rosewood, natural finished L2. It is the only 14 fret L2 I have pictures of. Most of the rosewood were the 13 fret trapeze set up. I doubt there are many of the 14 fret rosewood with fixed bridge. Terry |

Well, this is an interesting thread. Wonderful guitar in the OP, John! Others too are fortunate to have such nice Gibsons. My old Gibson is lightweight,
wonderful and I love it, but fails to have the gold inlay about the binding.
Nice find! f-d

Okay, I'm convinced that the bridge on John's is original, and that the inlay is not King Midas. But I think y'all should take a Sharpie and draw
in his features, anyway.

Thanks, again, all.
Sean, no need to worry about over-thinning. I haven't the heart for it. Ted, now you're talking. I've got to find a gold sparkle Sharpie. Satoru-san, thanks for posting that catalog pic. Finally, here's the L-2 in context, along side a matching L-1 and L-00 of the same era:

Beautiful guitar John. More evidence that Gibson sure made some lovely guitars back in the day. Thought you were going to give that credit card a rest? Stuart |

Beautiful line up!
Now John, a quick "tone test". If you sat and strummed a few chords on all three, what are your impressions? Use some of those tone-words you should have been learning. |

Jim, I'll definitely bring it by! I'll be going to Liverpool at the end of next week to give a talk at this Conference (and play a gig here). When I return, I'll bring the L-2 over.
Stuart, the L-2 levitated the credit card right out of my wallet! Dave and Dario, the guitars,, of course, sound amazingly similar. But, there are differences. Sometime in the next few days, I'll crank up my Zoom H2 and record the same dittie on each and post the results here.

Here you go, John, for a new twist on the Midas myth: http://www.bizrate.com/pens/products__keyword--sharpie+pen+gold.html
Here's a Sovereign like Tim's on eBay, ending tomorrow: You're bidding on a super-rare, all mahogany, 14.75" wide flat top with inlaid pearloid pickguard. It has a matching engraved pearloid fretboard and headstock overlay. The top is multi-bound with classy gold sparkle purfling. 26.5" Long-scale instrument with ebony pyramid bridge. Like the beloved, long-scale Stella12 made famous by leadbelly, but a more useable 6 string version and at a fraction of the price. Rescued from the guitar shop of a famous collector in southern MO. Freshly set up and ready to play by Top Shelf Music. Little play wear but has minor repaired back damage, some light overspray around the bridge, and a ding in the side near the endpin. Please see the pics for detail of these areas. Plays great with the action set at 6/64" on the bass side and 5/64" on the treble side at the body joint. This guitar sounds amazing and has a very dynamic, touch-sensitive tone. Please check out our other autions for more great vintage guitars, amps, parts, and accessories. TERMS and CONDITIONS ALL SALES FINAL Ask questions before you bid. Questions will be answered in a timely manner and additional photos can be provided. Auction winner must respond within 3 days and pay within 10 days. Visa, Master Card, Amex and Paypal accepted with verifiable billing address. Other payment types accepted only in compliance with ebay's policies. NO PERSONAL CHECKS. No credit card sales to Indonesia or Singapore.
