(07/02/09 9:55 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tags : None OK, so maybe not the little guys with pointy noses, hats and shoes, but I could not bring myself to put "Guitar X -vs- Guitar Y" in the subject line... Stopped into a GC on a whim today and there were the typical Martin suspects hanging on the wall: D-28, HD-28, HD-28V, a couple Road Series, I think an OMC-16RE AURA ... and a D-35. Don't really know why, but I have never cared enough about the D-35 to play it, maybe it is the 3-piece back I have been opposed to. Well, after playing the others, I picked this one up and played it since the pickings were so slim. Um, wow? I felt like a frickin' rock star playing this thing. It was not the tone that struck me, but the playability. I was fretting like a guitar GOD! I looked up the specs when I got home - besides the black pickguard, 3-piece back and bound fretboard the specs are identical to my HD-28. Is the fingerboard a different radius? Does the binding on the fingerboard force me to color inside the lines? But, thinking about your experience, could it be that this instrument by accident was set up the way it should be set up for a guitar you are playing? Frank forum intro p.54 or somewhere nearby. (07/03/09 7:12 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	On paper the necks are the same except for the bound fingerboard which shouldn't affect playing, but I prefer for playing in dark venues. If the D-35 was new it may have been "pleked" at the factory, not sure, but many of my GC frinds at the local flagship store have been commenting how the new Martins are coming through with really nice action from the factory, noticeably better unless your a bluegrasser. Action is the only variable to me with the necks, and yes a nice D-35 can be "surprising". There is something special and different about this bracing set-up, on a dread, that makes the D-35 so nice. I am not a fan of the binding. It I were to do a custom, I would use grained ivoroid instead. Jim D

Maybe it felt and sounded better to you as the player and thus you played better. Maybe it was built for you. I'm convinced that sometimes we run into a guitar that just fits. Something about how a particular instrument was built and set up just happens to be almost exactly what we need. Maybe the angle of the dangle or some miniscule difference in the hight of the strings, the tension of the strings, the angle of the nut, the way the neck was glued in, a slight difference in scale measurement...man, it could be so many things. I prefer to think of it as magic. Sometimes I don't want to know the bloody details. I'm happy that I found one that fits me so well it actually makes me play better. I'm a musician, not an engineer. (not dissing engineers here...) You might try that 35 again and if it strikes you the same way, maybe it's time to try and scrape up some money...... This has happened in four different area Guitar Center's (Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, and Long Island) and in multiple visits to some of the stores (with a different D-35). If Guitar Center is consistently getting lively and resonant D-35's, the Martin employees are evidently doing their job very well. Tony (Forum intro - page 11) Say hello to my little friend... Music isn't just about the left side of your brain! Go back there and play it again and buy that sucker! While you're sitting with your slide rule trying to figure out why it's such a great guitar for you, somebody with half your talent and ability will grab it. Guitars are such individual things, man....grab it. Take it home and figure out the engineering stuff later. Engineers and a few other vocations render most decisions by matrix, rather than emotion or other non-logical bases. However, even I have acknowledged that it is permissible to integrate occasional "emotional" or "less than pure logic" components into the decision matrix. (Had this not been the case, my wife would still be a happy single woman rather than tolerating me for over 30 years). Thus, I suggest to you that in compiling your decision matrix for this D-35, you may legitimately incorporate those subjective criteria which are not in conflict with your objective bases.
