The guitar looks much better than that, but there is some flaked finish on the sides. Doug Stein in Chattanooga owned the Arnold Norman Blake Special for a while, and the Century may have been involved in returning that guitar to Norman. I did repair work on the guitar (neck set, new bridge and bridgeplate, glue back braces, top crack repair) before Norman bought it. After that, I refretted it with jumbo frets. John

(07/02/09 11:34 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Fretting on pearloid does present some challenges, but a reset is more problematic, IMHO. First of all, you cannot use much heat on the fingerboard to loosen it from the top, due to the flammability. Shrinkage of the celluloid caused the fingerboard tongue on that guitar to curl up in the edges. I addressed that by removing the celluloid veneer, exposing the maple fingerboard underneath. With the neck removed, I cut three lengthwise slots in the fingerboard from the back side. Wetting and clamping the fingerboard allowed it to flatten completely. Then I glued the pearloid strips back on the fingerboard, and glued maple splines in the slots I had cut. John

It appears to be bleeding EIR from a reaction with the finish solvents. What type of glue did you use to re-glue the pearloid? Super glue. I have more confidence in it than any glue for celluloid. Acetone and acetone-based adhesives will glue celluloid, but they will cause shrinkage down the road, especially old celluloid. I don't understand when people don't take the time to give more details and especially not take detailed high-res. images when it comes to high-value instruments. I agree that the price was pretty attractive, but it depends on how much it costs to correct the unrecognized/undisclosed issues. Did anyone notice that there appear to be screws going through the wings of the bridge? Those wouldn't be original, and I'd be a bit concerned about their placement and whatever damage might have resulted from making those holes. Hopefully the X-brace is still intact. The tuners are non-original (not a big deal, since they're easily replaced), but I'd be concerned about that top crack that goes under the bass side bridge wing. Still, if this one sounds and plays anything like mine (which is from the same period), then the buyer is really going to like it! --John

Thanks, Tim Here you go, Tim. My L-C's body is from 1933 or '34 (judging from the sunburst). If you've got sharp eyes, you may notice that this is a 5-piece laminated neck. I've got to believe that the neck was replaced in the '40s, and the original fingerboard and MOTS/rosewood headstock overlay were transferred to the new neck. I am getting better at general vintage guitar stuff, but haven't really begun to delve into the world of vintage tuners. I mentioned in a thread in the Vintage Corner a while back a personal desire for a permanent thread in this section, or at the very least a link to some other website or book where one could go to see pictures and descriptions of the various vintage tuner models and makes, but I have yet to find such a resource. It would be a big job, to be sure, but I would imagine there are more than a few folks like me that would be most interested in the information if it was available. A couple of other questions if I may. What kind of tuners are those on your L-C, and, short of finding original replacements like those, which I would guess are quite expensive, does someone make new quality reproductions for use as replacements?
