Help identifying Bone vs. FWI bridge pins!

(06/30/09 11:12 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tags : None I recently routed through my accessories box to find a set of FWI pins for another Forum member. Somewhat to my surprise, I found FOUR sets of pins that all looked alike..."off white", with black ebony dots. I quickly eliminated the whitest set, as I could easily detect a seam in the side of the pin, telling me these were plastic. I am pretty sure I know which of the other three is the FWI set, meaning the other two are bone. But is there any way for me to be absolutely certain? I would provide photos, but any photo I can take will not show enough detail to discern between them. What would a pro do to tell the difference? Since I will most likely sell one or more of these sets, I sure want to know if I am selling a $30 set, or a $100 set! Thanks for any suggestions. Two should sound alike (bone) and one (FWI) should sound different than the other two. - Get a magnifying glass and inspect them. Two should look similar (bone) and one (FWI) should look different that the other two. - Drop them in a tall glass of water. Two should sink or float the same (bone) and one (FWI) should sink/float differently than the other two. - If you have a scale that weighs in grams then weigh the whole set against each set. I always see a tranlucense in the head of the pin around the ebony dot after I polish FWI pins. Like the color of the ebony trying to come through, I don't see that on bone. Not sure if others polish their pins the same way I do so that may not help. You would see adifference if you want to scrape them with a knife. Or 3 sets for $160 :>)
