Some of these D-28, D-21 and D-35 guitars have nice straight quarter-sawn BRW , so I'm wondering if a good example of a 60's BRW Martin is worth holding for a few more years. I have a nice clean original, good-sounding 1967 D-28 and I rarely play it any more. Is it likely to be an appreciating asset? 1967 D-28 BRW back Front detail I'd be interested to hear any informed opinions on where the value of this guitar might be headed in future years? John. The reality is that 60's Brazilian Martins have already appreciated a lot, and will continue to do so, unless Martin comes up with an available wood that sounds better. Brazilian Rosewood is a very dense wood (the stock I have doesn't even float in water) and there's not much out there that makes a better tonewood for guitars. I am one of those who believes that the sound is the foundation of what makes a guitar valuable. If your guitar sounds great, hold onto it. Unless, of course, you need some cash, which I am happy to give you for it! ~ John, the Martin Rookie ~

To John's point, there are two factors here in regard to the 60's Braz models, IMHO. One, there are no more of these being made with this quality of Braz, so that would seem to make them desirable due to scarcity. But secondly, desirability will depend on whether players want to spend relatively high dollars on these guitars, which are (to many players' thinking) not as desirable tonally yet much more costly than some scalloped brace guitars like the vintage and GE models that Martin currently makes. It will be interesting also to see how demographics may influence the market for these guitars. I think many may currently be owned by the baby-boomer generation, who (like) me may have bought them when they were relatively inexpensive. Will other generations later see them as desirable? A lot depends on whether the market "thinks" these guitars are going to continue to increase in value. If so that idea will be self-fulfilling. Last Edited By: PaulVA 06/30/09 4:12 PM. My modern Martins are all scalloped-brace models - OM-28, D-18V, D-16 GT. So the D-28's are a nice contrast, particularly well suited for strumming and flatpicking, with really good headroom and projection from the straight braces. Yours is from the small maple bridgeplate era, which many claim endows it with a sound superior to its rosewood-bridgeplate or large-rosewood-bridgeplate BRW siblings. The switch from maple to rosewood occurred in 1968, and the rosewood bridgeplate was enlarged in 1969 - our FAQ section points out... 235586 ( 1968 ) Rosewood bridgeplates on all guitars 242454 ( 1969 ) Larger rosewood bridgeplates on all guitars Play it in good health, and keep an eye on that pickguard's outside edge. Looks like it is just starting to lift, which is actually good news since the alternative to lifting or curling is usually a pickguard crack. I just picked up a 67 D-35, also with very nice looking Brazilian - wonder how close they are in serial numbers, John - email me & we'll compare. I bought the D-35 for a good price with the idea of enlarging the soundhole to see if the results would be as dramatic as they were on an old EIR one I opened up last year. But after hearing how good this one is & how original & in good shape, I probably won't have the nerve to modify it. Actually the guitar has a tiny, tight sort of double B string crack but doesn't seem to have increased in years so hopefully will stay stable for the immediate future anyway. John. Now that adirondack is available for tops, there may be a time that sitka tops are lumped in with large bridgeplates and aliphatic glue as being undesireable on a guitar. It isn't justified in my mind, but seeing how people feel about adirondack I don't know how sitka topped guitars will fare down the road. Just my nervous investment opinion. Personally, I would love to have that guitar (but I can't afford it). Your Signature ...

I enjoy every one of mine. At the time I bought them (a few years back) they were more reasonable, pricewise, sounded good, and had lovely BRW. To answer that I think there are a lot of unknown variables working over the next ten-twenty years. How quickly the economy expands, how much demand increases are two. In the long term, baby boomers dying off or "playing less" may actually depress demand. The acoustic guitar had a rebirth in the late 80's and it would be interesting to know what the age demographic is for acoustic guitar buyers. If you're really looking at this as an investment, find one in the best condition you can, and then don't play it. Michael . e E

They are the gold standard for steel string guitars. I can't get hurt on mine. I paid $240 for my 1962 D-28 new and $405 for my 1965 D-12-35 and another $410 for my 1967 D-35. Surely they must have increased somewhat in value. LOL It's a moot point since they won't be for sale but it's fun to contemplate.

Do me a favor if you will. Give it a good wake up call for me in the next few days and think of me while playing. I'll live vicariosly through your fingers. If you know a Neal Young song - play it and let me know. Interesting discussion though. As a potential buyer someday, I'd like to think they don't go up at all. I don't see them coming down though. Who knows - for investment sakes, buying a fairly recent Taylor may be the way to go. That seems to be the guitar the younger generation likes and when they have some $$, I wonder what their "holy grail" will be. If no ones buying Martins, who knows what the going rate will be.
