I noticed that the balls(?) of the original strings were color-coded: They were purple, black, red -- each string was different.
Does that ring any bells with anyone here?
Thx!

It didn't take long to wear out the strings on my new Martin. I changed them last night to the MSP4100s Martin recommends with my model and... don't
like them as much as the original strings (installed by Gruhn's): They're a little too bright for my tastes.
I noticed that the balls(?) of the original strings were color-coded: They were purple, black, red -- each string was different. Does that ring any bells with anyone here? Thx! |

Possibly D'addario strings. They are colored coded that way.

Just got off the phone with Gruhn's (they weren't responding to my email): They concur. They're D'addarios.
Thanks Mutt. |

You're welcome. Now the questions becomes which type of D'addario strings are they? Light, medium, 80/20, phosphor bronze, etc.

S'all good: they're D'addario PB lights. ;-)
That's a new string for me... I spent a lot of time dialing in the right strings for my hog 000 (Eric Clapton PBs) when she was new. And that's all I've known for quite a while... I feel pretty lucky to have hit the jackpot so quickly with my 00C-16DBRE. The D'addarios seem to be more about the guitar and less about themselves, if you know what I mean. Thx again! |

There's really no reason to get all tuned in on one set of strings being THE set for that guitar.
I think you should still try different things, from time to time. For instance, if you typically use D'Addario PB's, try D'Addario 80/20's, or vice versa. You might also want to try differring brands. There are so many flavors to pick from, and each can change the tone of your guitar so much, it can seem like a new guitar. Also, I wouldn't be too quick to judge a new set of strings. Some, really find their stride after a few weeks of playing in. You can't tell much, with a brand new set of strings, except that you've got new strings on the guitar. Play them in, and then see how they make your guitar sound. Darrell

Darrell's spot on. While I have favorite strings, I try different sets from different makers every now and then. I've had a few pleasant surprises that
way - and some disappointments - but hey, you never know what you'll find if you don't try something new once in a while.

Back in the day, I had an endorsement that put a new set of D'Addario XLs on my Strats daily; so I've been aware of D'Addario since the '80s.
But I've never really used their acoustic strings, no.
I guess I'm just not as adventuous as some: I tend to try every string under the Martin sun on a new guitar until I find what "works" for me, until I find the guitar's "voice" and thoroughly explore that. If I want a new sound, I buy a new guitar. And start the whole blamed thing over again... Come to think of it -- maybe a change of brand every now and then would be cheaper.

Just a thought regarding the Martin strings being too bright as you said. I'm not a fan of strings that are too bright either, as most people. But what I
found was that those strings that are maybe initially a bit too bright for just a few days, they last so much longer than the strings that sound perfect from
day 1 and VERY quickly go dead. The difference in that optimum tone window is huge it seems, at least for my tastes.
If I had to put a set on and play out that night, I might put on something like the less bright John Pearse PB lights on my M-36, good to go from first strum, but they would be history VERY soon after. It does depend on the guitar too of course, some are dark sounding and only sound good with bright strings, some are bright and only sound good with mellower strings. But it sounds like you've been playing for quite awhile so you probably know all this already. Jim |
