Anyone have an 00-18V ? |
Lead | |
|
I'm lusting for an 00-18V even though I've never played one. I almost had a 000-18 GE last year. I put it on layaway, but had to cancel, when I
suddenly needed the money. I wanted a short scale Martin to replace my Baby Taylor. When I'm sitting at the computer, I use the Baby for jamming to
youtube videos, CDs, Guitar Pro tabs, etc. The Baby won't stay in tune very long, is kinda ugly, but has a pretty decent sound for the price. But, ever
since I got my first Martin, I am completely spoiled by the tone and craftsmanship. (I've got a D-16GT and an HD-28V). I think the 00 body size would be
better for this purpose than the 000. I haven't been able to find one to try out here in Houston, but won't be ready to buy until early 2010.
I'd love to hear your opinions on the 00-18V. Pictures too, if you own/owned one! -Bob

Greyrat:
I have one and I think its the best Martin sound out of the current line-up. Short scale and 13/4 nut width is the bomb for me. I've had some problems with mine and currently it is in Nazareth getting repairs. This sounds bad for a guitar just over a year old but Martin is sticking with me and making it right. I've never had a guitar come back from the Martin factory and not be perfect. This is why I like to buy new and get the warranty. There's a pretty cool one at The Podium in Minnesota with Ad top (Their 50th anniversary guitar) Here's a link to photos of mine and an audio clip. http://www.randallhill.org/webblog/?p=388 Hippiedog |

I have a sunburst 00-18V I bought last October. It is an awesome guitar. Great tone, and loud - almost as loud as my dreads. I play it more than any of my
others. I used to have a hard time deciding which guitar to play, but now I just pick this one up. I used to think that the HD28 was Martin's best sounding
guitar, but not any more. The HD28 is the best sounding dread. This guitar is also very comfortable playing sitting down. And the sunburst is sooooooo
beautiful.

Yes, but for jamming with youtube consider a CA Cargo as well, you cannot hurt it.

By 2010 and between now and then, keep your eyes out for a used regular 00-18 or even an 0-18.

just picked mine up recently, Holy Moses! what a tone. sounds like it should be on an old 78 record. Incredible for fingerstyle, and really barks well when
strummed which I didn't expect. Perfect size for couch picking and great for travel as well. Only regret is I waited too long. should've gotten one
earlier.

Yes, but for jamming with youtube consider a CA Cargo as well, you cannot hurt it.Thanks for the suggestion. The Baby has gotten scratched up from the furniture/desk/chairs near the computer. I used to think that the HD28 was Martin's best sounding guitar, but not any moreWow, that's pretty impressive. I can't wait to try one! Greyrat:I hope that it wasn't a bad craftsmanship issue. I feel the same way about getting a new one for the warranty, but would seriously consider a nice used one to save some money. By 2010 and between now and then, keep your eyes out for a used regular 00-18 or even an 0-18.Are they discontinuing it? I would like to try a regular 00-18, and hadn't even thought of the 0 size. That smaller size might be even more convenient. I'll go to Martin's site and read up on it mine hasn't gotten much playtime for the last month since i got my 0-28vs but i've been meanin to get that guitar out and compare the two. think i'll do that tonight...Please post your thoughts after comparing! I always love looking at the 00 of yours, Joel...even more so in person! It is mighty fine looking. Add another happy owner here. It's a comfy guitar to play, hold and listen to. I've played it with and in the presence of both larger and more
expensive guitars and that really drives home what a gem it is. It is also one if the nicest sounding mahogany back guitars. It does not tend to an excess of
nasal tone I feel mahogany guitars can have.
I have 2 V series guitars and IMO they have tone and personality that I have only found in more expensive guitars. Have fun shopping. |

I owned a very decent '72 00-18 which possessed the "woody" vintage sound.Sold it as the new 2008 00-18V played much better. The short scale has a
definite advantage for left hand work up the neck.It has been on the road a coupla times, always performing nicely...

Are they discontinuing it? I would like to try a regular 00-18, and hadn't even thought of the 0 size. That smaller size might be even more convenient. I'll go to Martin's site and read up on itThese models are no longer made, which is why I said "used". But they were made in the non-vintage (read - post 1969) era, so they can be found at reasonable prices. Just not often, because there aren't a ton of them around. I've owned a lot of different Martin (along with other maker's) Guitars over the years and this 00-18V is one of my favorites. I've been playing
Dreads for the past 30+ years and this is the 2nd small body Guitar I've had. Love the size, the short scale and best of all, the tone. Wish I would have
discovered the small bodies years ago. Fingerstyle, strum, flatpick - this little picker can do it all but it's especially suited for fingerstyle.
Surprising volume for a small body. Get one

I was at The Podium in Minneapolis in March, and bought one of their Custom 50th Anniversary 00-18 guitars. The top is Engelmann (not Adirondack). I also
played a 00-18V that they had and it was also a wonderful guitar. This was my first 00. I've owned an 0-15 (1955), two 0-18 (1963, 1933), and a 0-28K
(1928). The new Podium model is my favorite of the bunch. But I could just as easily picked the 00-18V. I liked the no aging toner, silky look of the Engelmann
top on the Custom.

Thanks again for all the replies on the 00-18V. I went to the Martin page and only saw the 00-15, 00-18V, 00-18 Tim O'Brien. The Tim O is a little too much
for my budget, the 18V will be a stretch, but I think I could manage if there was a 40% discount ($3349 list) like MFG and Maury's seem to offer. If I fall
short of that, maybe a used 00-18, like kydave was mentioning. I wonder what a good used 00-18V or 00-18 would go for?

I sold my 00-18V for $1,500 last year. (It was a wonderful guitar, but I needed the $ as I had just bought my HJ-38 and really couldn't afford both.) I
highly recommend one.

FoolForWood wrote: I can't really describe sounds, and often don't understand others' descriptions. I so rarely play different guitars. But having said that, I think the custom seemed a little more lively, responding to a lighter touch, while the 18V seemed just a bit tougher, with more headroom to handle my loud barbaric fingerpicking with plastic fingerpicks. But I can't remember if the tones, the sounds of the highs, mids and lows were all that different. I've probably played more different guitars this month than I've played in a lifetime and I have a hard time remembering specifics beyond what I liked, and what didn't really make an impression. I picked the custom because I'm currently working on playing a softer style without picks, and I liked the non-toner, highly silked Engelmann top. I bought other guitars, and one or both of them will handle the barbaric stuff. But after a whirlwind of trying guitars lately, I wonder if I went back and did it all over again if I would hear different things on different days? That's the way it's always been with my personal guitars at home, the newer ones more than the older ones it seems. Sorry I can't be of more help but some of you folks here are pretty amazing, with much better ears and descriptive skills than mine. |
