(06/30/09 6:18 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tags : None Hi, I just an accident where a thin metal cork backed ruler fell from a shelf and bounced off of the top of a guitar on a stand. The sharp corner hit the top leaving what I regard as a tiny ding but it is deep and through the finish. I can tell because if I run my finger over it feels rough. It's a nice custom Martin that I've played a whole lot and dings don't really bother me. But I am concerned about keeping it from getting worse, particularly because I think it's through some of the finish. It is about 1/16" long (measured with the ruler that did the deed), but really it is one really low depression with an angular lead in if that makes sense. Is there something that I put in or rub into this minute hole to move the finish around a bit, add some or protect it? I am not all that handy but I don't mind rubbing in something clear to protect it, add to finish or move it around a little if this makes sense. Thanks in advance for any pointers. I've read somewhere that it can be done with super glue also. FRETS.com has some information on how to drop fill and level the finish. http://frets.com/FRETSPages/Luthier/Technique/Finish/Lacquer/DropFill/dropfill.html Also check out the razor blade scraper there if you need to remove any raised areas around the damage. k

Others are more contrary, but it might be worth a try. Best way to learn this technique is to work on an old beater untill you get the hang of it. I wouldn't try to learn on your nice custom Martin.

I'm not attempting anything near that here. I'm going to be happy to seal in the finish over any wood. Don't want to raise it to top level so much as turn it into a normal ding.

The guitar has not disintegrated. I regard it as unfortunate but a consequence of taking it and playing it all over the place. The key is patience as I took 6 weeks to build up the lacquer and let each layer dry a week between applications. I sanded and polished it out with the 3M micro pads from StewMac. You would be hard pressed to find the repair today.

(07/02/09 2:25 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	I put a a similiar ding on my D-18 that was fairly deep,I'm not even sure how it happened but I used the superglue method and although it's a little darker than the top grain at least its sealed and is pretty hard to see from a distance unless your looking for it. You do have to be be really careful when you scrape and buff out because the superglue is harder than the lacquer. The finish around where I filled and buffed is a little thin and you can see a little grain when you look from an angle in the light. But for me this is better than having a deep and open ding that would have collected dirt and grunge. It's on the right side, middle of the picture on the edge next to the binding. I still sound pretty decent and my wife still married me. Inevitable signs of activity over the years. That's life and you'll have a few good stories about the flaws.
