I understand anyone can get excited during a performance when something extraordinary happens and they erupt into applause. But, in certain genres - bluegrass particularly - it seems every solo in every song is worthy of prolonged rebel yells and applause. Invariably, everone misses the entire first half of the next person's solo or vocal due to the overly excited elements of the crowd.. It's nearly as annoying to me as people who talk all the way through a concert. Brian

I don't mind an occasional "Yeah!" or something similar...just so long as it's over with quickly so the next music passage can be heard and appreciated. I'm a concert 'listener' so I try to listen to every note and nuance, etc. Difficult to do with everyone applauding every few minutes. I saw David Bromberg about a week ago and it was the same thing. Folks yelling and applauding several times during the songs... I've been told that this sort of thing is part of going to a live concert and if I don't like it I should stay home, etc. But I don't see it at every concert I attend. We that play out all the time have to have something to make up for the little money we make and a round of applause after a solo or break can make one's day. If there is a long, loud show of appreciation after a certain passage the band can vamp on the chord that follows the break until the cheering subsides and then continue the song. At least it shows that the audience is being entertained. Naw, really I understand where you are coming from, but at least those cheering multitudes are paying attention to what's going on and not B-Sing or talking on their cell phones or twittering or whatever people are doing with those little electronic devices that seem to be permanently attached to their bodies. I agree. When I get applause after a solo its so cool. I really appreciate it. As far as when I am in the audience, I agree with what was previously posted...its just part of the live experience. It never bothers me at all. Bluegrass is a sort of "virtuoso" approach to old-timey music. and the fancy playing IS the point. So I think it is proper to show appreciation for a fine lick. Usually, the crowd times it properly so that they can hear the next instrumentalist take his lead. I think it's pretty cool & I imagine the guys on stage do too. Applause after a solo never bothers me ... whether I'm on stage or in the audience. Musicians thrive on it. However, what really irritates me at a concert are the ladies who sit in front of me and then decide to stand up and dance for the next 90 minutes while sloshing their beers around. (06/29/09 9:23 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	On the Pro side: I think that there are more musicians in the audience for Bluegrass than for other kinds of music so they might know how difficult that solo is to play. On the Con side: A few young (or not as young as they think they are) folks mistakenly act at a Bluegrass concert the same as if they were at a modern Country Music (Southern Rock) concert. In a Bluegrass audience there's generally much less competition over who can shout the longest or loudest. I cut them some slack though. They did come out to a Bluegrass performance after all. I want them to keep coming back. I've seen some over time learn the atmosphere of Bluegrass listening that way.

What bothers me is not all breaks are inspired and I get the feeling that folks feel if we clapped for one, it's just insensitive not to give each performer the same acknowledgement, which in turn cheapens the accolade for the inspired performance. f-d ¡papa gordo ain't no madre flaca! As a performing player, it's nice to hear applause after one of us plays a solo. I am not a fan of rebel yells, though. And I don't like loud talking or yucking it up while we're playing. I know we can't expect rapt attention, but I guess my thing is the rudeness factor. I was extra grumpy yesterday. I'm old, so that's allowed! Brian

Nothing as bad as playing to a group of people who think they are at a funeral home!!!!!!!!!! Musicians FEED off the audience. The more responsive the crowd is, the more the performers will work to give an entertaining show.

I was at a Bluegrass Fest and got conned into taking the stage and taking a "break.." I am not a professional musician and very seldom play in front of anybody except the jam group and an occasional nursing home. As the solo was winding down the clapping started and I thought to myself, "they're glad I'm about done." Then as I finished, it broke out in what sounded like a roar and I realized that the audience actually liked the solo. The feeling was great and I now have a better understanding of what a musician feels on stage and give a much more enthusiastic clap when I'm in the audience.

We knew it before we got there from talking with other bands on the circuit. Sure enough, the first night after about 4 or 5 songs, we had not even gotten applause at the end of the songs, the people just talked through it. Shortly afterwards, our lead singer told the audience we were passing around a pad, for them to write their addresses down so we could come to their house and sit and stare at them. But then, after a little more time and a few more beers, the crowd would come around.

I find it one (the only) perk about getting old(er). Hell, I get grumpy when I see people walking the aisles of Walmart either texting, tweeting or talking on cell phones instead of paying attention to where they are going or if anyone else might be simultaneously occupying part of the aisle. Or one of those folks with the cell phone bud in their ear walking around seemingly talking to themselves. Sigh. I also relate to Porky Pigs's 'view'. At a ZZ Top concert a few years ago Loverboy was the opening act and the whole row in front of our party was made up of ladies who had obviously been in their prime during Loverboy's heyday and found it neccessary to rise and dance along with some of the tunes. They have apparently become a little broader in the beam in the interim and blocked our view. Here is where the 'grumpy' part comes in - I really didn't care if I could see the band, but their blocking my view pissed me off anyway. Golden years my ass........
