Possible Nigerian/Paypal scam- Urgent info needed |
Lead | |
|
I've got an Ebay guitar that was listed on Craigslist for $2,200. A person notified me with an American sounding name saying that they wanted to buy the
guitar for their daughter and would pay $2,400 for me to end the auction and ship the guitar to them. I sensed a possible scam but thought that if they did
send me the money, I should be safe. I gave them my Paypal address and lo and behold, I recieved the money. The bad is that they want me to ship it to Nigeria-
scam capital of the world. Should I honor this and is the payment safe or should I end the Ebay auction, which ends tonight and ship the guitar to Nigeria. Any
ideas or experience with such a situation?? Much thanks for any help.

You have not quite "received the money". You will not have "received" it until you have moved it out of your Paypal account and into your
actual bank account, however you happen to do that sort of thing (by transfer or by check). Only when the money is actually in your bank account, not your
Paypal account, do you send the guitar and not a moment before. If the buyer indicates impatience, remind him that Nigeria is the home of many internet
scams, and you surely wouldn't want his good name to be linked with that sort of thing.
When the fellow does get angry (which I predict he will), do NOT under any circumstances attempt to "refund" his original payment. Your refund will not go against his original payment, it will be charged to your own Paypal-linked account and you will be out by that much. Return NOTHING until his payment or check has cleared. Explain this to him. Watch him disappear. When he DOES disappear, be sure to contact Paypal and explain what happened. (I suspect they will have contacted YOU first, when his payment turns out to be bogus.) Finally, as a show of good faith on your part, you might go ahead and cancel the eBay sale. It will cost you little enough to do so and then relist it next week when it turns out his payment is no good.

If it sounds even vaguely like a scam (and this one certainly does), it is. Run away now. Any other course of action would be nothing short of stupid, IMO.

I agree with Dave and David, except lean more to Dave in that I'd simply run away from this. You don't need to worry because the payment is no good.
I got similar emails for about a year after I sold a guitar on eBay. |

I'd be amazed if this wasn't a scam.
You might want to keep a very close eye on both your ebay and paypal accounts for quite some time to watch for any unwelcome activity, like a hi-jack attempt. Also, only open any emails that have come through ebay, not direct from the buyer, who might bury a program in one that can record and send him your keyboard entries, and thus uncover your passwords. If this sounds a bit paranoid, you can't be too careful these days. Yorkie |

If ANY deal involves Nigeria, I'd avoid it. Period. Not worth the risk. 99.9999999999% chance it's a scam, especially given the "I'll pay
you more than you want" BS. Typical bait.

It's a scam. Run. Now.
Why would you risk this????

I am his daughter, Shmarmy. This gift of a guitar was supposed to be a surprise, but you have ruined it. Many thanks. Also you have brought forward my
father's difficulty with English, but he never had a lesson before and has made amazing progress in the 6 months I have been teaching him, wouldn't you
agree? I think the guitar was to thank me for this. What a wonderful, generous man he is! I am proud to be his beautiful, available daughter.
Now I hope I have taught you a lesson and that we have regained your trust. By the way, are you available? |

Contact Paypal in writing and explain the full story and state that you strongly suspect that the payment to
them was made with fraudulent funds. Keep a copy of all communication.
David, you did hit the nail on the head with the method of the scam. The "buyer" is intending to ask for a "refund".... which of course, is with good money. Rod |

I keep getting chaff in e-Mails telling me how I've won the Nigerian lotto or some such. I wish you the best with this. Anything with an offer from
overseas, to me, is suspect.

I saw a show on TV a few months back where they met one of these scammers in Nigeria. He took off really fast when he realized he was being outed.

Reading all the above info makes one very leary about listing any high end item on e-Bay. I wonder if you e-mailed PayPal, told them of your concerns and have
them e-mail you when they know for 100 % certain that these said funds are in your account. If then it was shipped, heavily insured and the buyer has to sign
upon delivery, could the buyer still then claim his money back from PayPal ? Or if he told PayPal that the item wasn't as described would PayPal still give
him his money back ? A very tricky situation indeed. I think I would just relist and say no overseas shipping, course any scammer in North America could then
maybe pull the same scam.
I know a couple of years ago I bought a 1620 Mackie mixer for $650 from a seller in Shreveport, never got it as shipper went bankrupt, fought with PayPal for ages and finally got back $200 , but only actually got $175 as PayPal kept $25 as a processing fee. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. You can lead a horse to water but a pencil has to be lead. |

PayPal isn't perfect, for sure. A DVD I bought from Europe was promised to work in U.S. region players, It didn't and PayPal would only refund my money
if I sent it back in a way that had a tracking number. Given that I paid only about $14 for it and the shipping would cost more, I just let it go.

What is OP to do, being in this specific position? If it was me, I would close the bank account that is tied to the Paypal account today.

Reading this thread just made me realize: Last night I got to talk to the only member of Nigerian royalty in the world who actually buys guitars... King Sunny
Ade!
He's playing two shows tonight in Seattle. Can't wait! (And no, I don't think he bought your guitar Smeckman).
