Wanting to play a D18VS |
Lead | |

I have always played 14 fret guitars but am now interested in 12 fret slotheads. My problem is that I don't have access to one to judge their
characteristics. I am interested in buying one if I have a favorable experience. Does anyone know where I might try one out within 200 miles of Danville, VA.
This could be a music store with one in stock or someone who has one for sale. Please email me at KC3PJ@yahoo.com if you
have any heplful info. Thanks.

you might want to talk with this seller on Buy and Sell, you have the waiting period, just a thought. The last one I played was 3 years ago, very nice, strong
bass and brighter mid than a D18GE, I think the model is terrific. You might call Franklin Music in Roanoke 540-354-7854, Clay Moore, if you haven't
already, very knowledgable, I've bought a couple of guitars from him; and Fret Mill in Roanoke, don't know #, good luck , Kerry

I just bought one of these recently and I am going to tell you your on the right track. Now how far are you from Leesburg VA because Melodee Music there has
one. At least thats what it says on their website. http://www.melodeemusic.com/index.cfm?view=regular_items&itemCategory=acoustic%20guitars&THISstartrow=66&THISendrow=70
I have worked with these folks in the past and they are honest and stand behind everything they sell. Give them a call. Bill Kelman

I too have recently purchased one about 2 months ago. I also have a d-18GE. Hoss, the 18vs, is heavenly sounding. I bought mine without playiong her sight
unseen. She has a big full deep sound with crisp highs. I love the action and neck and the general feel of her. I don't miss the 14th fret to body at all.
Everytime I play her, I think she's turning into my favorite guitar!

I have had mine three years now. I took the big leap and ordered one having never seen or played one. I based my decision on the accounts of those here who had
one. Cletusmcduff is pretty spot on with his comment on this guitar. They have a wonderful warm full sound that really pleases my ear. They are really
versatile too. I use mine to flatpick and these are excellent for fingerstyle as well. I don't play up the neck so I don't miss that and I have another
14 fretter to fill that gap. I will never part with mine. My choice of this model was a compromise. I really wanted a D18GE bad. I have seen some killer
D18GE's at Mass. St. Music that made me just ache for one. I had the opportunity to get that good Martin come my way but it was a stretch for me and the
family politics did not allow for debt at the time. So I took a look at the D18VS. It is a bit cheaper but it had the promise of being a great sounding guitar
and so I went for it. I don't regret the choice. After it opened up it really showed it's stuff and I love it. I love the mod v neck. I find it easier
to play. That part made me anxious before it arrived but I have found I much prefer the mod v neck and of course the 1 3/4" nut width and the 2 1/4"
bridge string spacing. This model is not as popular as say the HD28 or the D18GE but it is kind of a hidden gem in Martins big pile of guitars.

It seems like every time the subject of the D-18vs comes
up, Cletus, Ozark & I show up sounding like evangelists. I don't have much to add to what they have stated above, but wanted to say that the Mod V on this model is considerably softer (or less pronounced) than on a lot of other models. I really, really like pretty much everything about the guitar. |

Yeah, I have to admit to that Greg. I'm kinda a broken record with the same old pitch. I just can't help myself. The D18VS just a wonderful
underappreciated guitar that deserves more owners and players out there. Being a bluegrasser/old time music fan, picking the D18VS was more along the lines of
Norman Blake and his 12 fretters. It's no coincidence that Norman is my favorite picker overall. Still, the 12 fretter is a nontypical choice for the
typical bluegrasser who usually wants a 14 fret dred like everyone else has because Lester played one in 46. I am not being critical of this at all. I'm
pretty much the same way myself. Still, I made a good choice when I bought one sight unseen and unheard. I would personally NOT do that again when the time to
buy a guitar comes around. When I have done it I got lucky. I personally think I got a good'un as to the specific D18VS. I hope to have a good set up done
on it this fall and will have the bridge slotted and ebony pins put in.

I don't own one, but I've always been a fan of this guitar. I mentioned in another thread a while back that I thought it would be wicked cool if there
was a Golden Era custom based on it (Adi top, GE bracing, etc...). Oh, with an Amberburst option.

These guitars look just awesome with sunburst. There is one owned by another forum member here that has changed owners a time or two that has a burst and a
wonderful Greven pickguard that is to die for. Martin makes no bettter looking guitar IMHO.

Thanks for all the comments. I am having trouble locating one to try, but I will keep looking. I also flatpick in the style of Norman Blake.
