Update: I am finished with the Larrivee Parlor. I believe it helped to make it more resonant. Next up, is my new Martin custom O-28. I will
"vibrate" it for a week, then see how she sounds..................

Jim, do you start with new stings? Does it matter? Just curious.
I realize you would play it before and after regardless of sting age. Do the instructions suggest one over the other? |

Thats a rediculous amount of money for a vibrator.

The strings on the Martin were fairly new, so I did not change them. And I would do the before and after comparison with the same strings.
In terms of the price paid for a vibrator...........depends on what it is use for! Jim D |

desaljs wrote:Agree - relative to the four or five digit amount that many spent on guitars, this is a relatively small amount. If it can improve one's playing enjoyment (guitars sounding better, and earlier so), why not? Anyway, the point of the original post is to report on whether Tonerite works, not to debate on its price. And then, if one doesn't like its price tag, there is always the option of DIYing one. Jim D: would love to know more about what it does to your custom 0-28. William

William,
The Custom O-28 is getting the treatment right now. I am going to leave it on until the end of the week, and will post some impressions then. Thanks for the interest. I realize that many foks here might think this is all a waste of time and money. That might be so, but I am willing to give it a go. I think we all agree that playing the instrument is the best way to open it up. The wood needs to vibrate, and the ToneRite does that. I am fortunate to have a few instruments, and I can only play one at a time, so I hope this will give the ones that get less playing time a head start. Jim D |

Tonerite and 0-28 | ||

Jim,
Just curious since I am thinking about getting a tonerite myself. It has been nearly four months and no update. How did the 0-28 sound after treatement? thanks, Mike |

Sorry.........I lost track of this post. I have been following a few other ToneRite posts. In terms of my 0-28, I did notice a more open and resonant sound.
I feel this guitar needs more time with the ToneRite.
I have noticed that the ToneRite seems to have a more dramatic effect on stiffer wood, and larger instruments. Adi and Italian spruce really changed after a week. I'm not as sure about sitka. The Larrivee Parlor I treated is gone. I traded that one away. Even after a week of ToneRite, I still did not like it. No amount of treatment would have helped it, to my ears. So, I am going to treat the 0-28 for another full week. I just have to get around to setting it up. Jim D |

I get the idea the device vibrates. This simulates use and after severals days, you are simulating several years of play on the guitar; presumably speeding the
aging/opening of the instrument. Am I on track??
I wonder if C.F. Martin has worked with these devices? Does anyone know? |

I agree with the previous poster who suggested it will make more of a difference on a red spruce top. I used it on all of my guitars for a minium of 6 days --
the difference in the GE was very noticable - much more responsive and better volume. It also made a bit of a difference in the other sitka topped guitars,
but not as much of an improvement in volume. Couldn't tell any significant difference in my 42 year old D-28. I lent mine to the guys at Janet Davis
Music to see if the could do a little indepedent study. They tried it out on a brand new HD-28V that they said was very tight and they reported that the
ToneRite did help it open up fairly well. I'm a believer.

McCawber wrote:I believe that the tonerite will work as advertised. However, I have yet to see anyone claim that the effect is permanent. I sort of compare it to warming up for 20 minutes before the guitar starts to loosen up. Have you noticed a permanent change in the way the GE sounds without using the tonerite? If yes, does the "loosening" effect diminish after a few days, weeks, etc...? |

Thanks Hamjack. The results you got with your D18A, and others on the D18GE, really piqued my interest.

I agree with you Hamjack - I have noticed no slipback that I can tell. Although, that may be a unfair assumption as I've been playing the GE a lot more
since treatment. I keep it by my easy chair in a Hercules stand for an easy grab when I put a book down or tire of what's on the boob tube. As a result
it probably gets at least an hour or two every day - which may also be preventing slip back. I do agree that after the intial treatment, you don't seem to
get quite as much out of additional treatments.

Even without the results posted here I would have said that a) it sounded like it should work in principle and b) it would likely work best with new guitars
that had large, tight tops, like the GE series.
I found this thread by searching on Google for "Tonerite reviews" because I was thinking of getting one to break in my Adirondack topped guitars, which could certainly use it. The man who introduced the UMGF to the top vibrator technique was one of the original moderators, named Alan, but his last name escapes me at the moment. He had a particular kind of massager that had suction cups on it. He would stick two of these onto the guitar top and swore they did an amazing job. Several other people tried it out and were also reported very good results. But one person left it on over night and ended up with a marred finish, with circles embedded into it from the rubber suction cups. This led to a big to do, where the party of the second part thought the party of the first part should be held responsible, etc, etc. This Tonerite machine seems to follow the same principle, for slightly more money and a lot less change of ending up with a guitar that looks like it was attacked by a giant squid. $150 does not seem like a lot of money if it really works. Might help a shop keeper sell a lot of guitars a lot faster. Sat. Oct. 24 - Daytime Open Mic at Freddy's in Brooklyn!
