I need chords for "Woodstock" please? |

One thing I learned recently from watching the 1969 "Big Sur" festival is that Joni Mitchell composed "Woodstock" on piano. Makes for
tough guitar chording and I'm having trouble figuring them out.
Can someone list the chords for "Woodstock"? Any key will do. Thank you.

or
http://www.chordie.com/chord.pere/tabfu.thudspace.net/c/crosby_stills_nash_and_young/woodstock.crd you may be familiar with chordie, if not you will love the feature of transposing the song into different keys until you find one that fits your playing, have fun, Kerry ps: she probably plays in an open tuning as is her style, someone here will know more about that than me.

David, a second look in daylight shows that's not how I do it...here's my take, FWIW:
Woodstock
Joni Mitchell
Am I came upon a child of God
he was Dm walking along the road, and I asked him "Where you E going?" and he Am told me. Said "I'm going on down to Yasgur's farm, gonna Dm join in a rock and roll band. Gonna camp out on the E land and set my Am soul free." We are Dm star dust, we are Am golden and we've Dm got to get our E selves back to the Am garden

Thanks Mike. Thanks Kerry, yeah, she does everything in open tuning, some uniquely her own.

What was the tuning Mitchell used originally?

She used a piano, which lets you throw all kinds of individual notes inside a ten-finger chord. Here's her very first take on the song:
Later she self-produced a guitar performance but it's all dark and murky and no close-ups on her hands:

Eva Cassidy has a much more transparent version of the song, all on guitar.

Coolest version of Woodstock I've heard is when James Taylor performed it along with Fire & Rain and Sweet Baby James on The Howard Stern Show. Check
it out here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xA8r8CPTSbA
Hope you enjoy it. |

Dave,
I have a book called "joni mitchell, hits". It states it is the authentic guitar tab edition. As the title implies, it contains many of Joni's most beloved songs including "Woodstock". Many of the songs are in alternate tuning. "Woodstock" has the guitar in standard, but tuned down a half step. She creates the tension and release that is so compelling in this song by moving from the Em to a E7sus and then resolving to a A7sus. Of course Ms. Mitchell, the musical genius that she is, does not play these chords in the first position. The book has it all tabbed out fingerstyle. But if you do play it in the first position the "feel" is there.... Or better yet get a copy of the book and learn it "right". It is a complex arrangement that I gave up on many years ago when I first purchased the book. Perhaps my chops have improved enough for me to learn the song... After all, it was a song that inspired a generation... "V" |
