(05/25/09 3:56 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Henk, in about 1932, Martin made a few mahogany guitars for Montgomery Ward. I was wondering if this guitar might have been one of those. Most MW guitars were made by Chicago builders, so I suppose this could alternately have been a copy of a 2-17 made by one of them. Or Chicago built, perhaps, and not related to MW at all. I'd be happy to include these pics in the bracing library. Maybe someone will recognize the build. I have not shown them anywhere before. The kerfed lining looks more like mahogany than cedar, I'd say. And the spruce on the back centerline seems to have the grain perpendicular to what you usually see. Perhaps it's a good idea if we show these pics to the folks in The Vintage Corner. Henk

She's actually put down her violin and started learning to finger pick. That said, she graduates from high school on Thursday of this week so it seems like the guitar I bought because it was from my father's college graduation year will be a high school graduation present and will go off to college with her in the fall. A few years ago I bought a (circa 1860) 2½-34 from Floyd Turner. That hooked me on the small ones for good. I added a 1923 2-17, 1916 1-21, 2001 5-30 (Mini-Martin), and (circa 1850's) 3-17. These are great instruments with really fine sound. People shake their heads everytime I have the 2-17 out. One fellow came up to me and said "There's somethin' wrong with that little guitar you got." I asked, "What?"; and he said, "a box that little, shouldn't be that LOUD!" The tone of the 1-21 is balanced and pretty with surprisingly sonorous bass and clear trebles. It plays easily, with silk and steel strings, and is great for fingerpicking; so clear! The plainness of the decoration makes it as beautiful as a Shaker chair. The 5-30 is a Terz guitar and, really, too small to enjoy as an all-round instrument. The sound is too constrained as well, I think. But, it is beautiful and well-made and I like having it. The 2½-34 is beautiful in its detail and seems to quiver with delight any time it is played. I use silk and steel strings on it and the beauty of the tone is such that I often stop playing in the middle of a piece and just hold the side or sound hole to my ear. It is almost mesmerizing; just a magic music box. For sheer beauty of sound, I choose this one among my fourteen Martins. The 3-17 came with the original coffin case and is in truly remarkable shape for such an old thing. By the time I got it, I was on a quest to possess as many of the sub-zeroes as possible. I put gut strings on it and really enjoy the different characteristics they bring to both the sound and the feel. This will make a great guitar for Civil War songs as the 150th anniversary events begin soon. They're as light as feathers; delicate, yet resilient enough to continue to serve their intended purpose for as much as a century and a half; and they sing their hearts out whenever touched - as though they enjoy it themselves! I sometimes examine the wood, the grain, the texture, and the details and think to myself of the men who made these. I wonder if old Mr. Martin himself, or Frank Henry Martin, handled them. Sometimes I gaze at the old photos of them and their workmen in the books and wonder if I will leave anything so profound on earth when I depart...

(06/26/09 3:33 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Here are a couple of photos of my sub-zero collection with (left to right) a 1-21 (1916), 2-17 (1923), 2½-34 (c. 1860), 3-17 (c. 1850's), 5-30 "Mini-Martin" (2001). My first Martin was a 1966 D-28 but I quickly became enamored with the beautiful proportions of the 12-fret models and added a D12-45 and 00-45 (both 12-fret models) when I was able to afford them. I never really had my hands on one of the old sub-zeroes until about ten years ago ("Where have you been all my life?") so I have added all these since that time. I do not dislike dreadnoughts; I just like other models better. My favorite is either the 2½ or the 2. I have often wondered whether Martin might issue a 2-45, 2-28, or even a 1-45 through their 1833 series. But, for me, I think it is the 2½; beautifully proportioned, extremely comfortable to play and hold, and mesmerizing sound. The 34 is an intriguing style, as well. I really wasn't "into" the white look of the ivory bridge when I got it but, over time, the combination of the beautiful 150 year-old abalone rosette, the delicate herringbone binding, and elephant ivory bridge and pins really won my eye and my heart. I wouldn't wish Martin to do this today, obviously, but, it is arresting in its beauty, I think. I will post more detailed photos of these instruments in my Guitar Gallery thread.

First of all the bad news... it's got a fairly horrendous crack running down the treble side, extending from the middle of the upper bout down to about 2" from the end pin. But it was stabilized with 5 small internal cleats, probably decades ago, and (although it doesn't look very nice) it's not a sonic or structural issue. I took it to Frank Ford when I first got it and his opinion was "The player doesn't see it and the audience doesn't see it, and it's not a structural problem, so I would just leave it alone". So that's what I did. You can see the crack on the web page for it that's referenced in my sig below. I found it at Guitar Center San Jose about 3 years ago. They had just gotten it in, and it was on a 30-day police hold, as they must do for all used instruments in San Jose. They had it strung like a ukulele and labeled "1928 Martin Baritone Uke, $200". I told them it wasn't a ukulele, since ukes don't have serial numbers, but they wouldn't hear it. So I paid the two hundred and they put it away for me, to pick up 30 days later. It has a really sweet tone, and I love it (even though I'm not much good at playing it). Every so often I pick it up and remind myself how to play it as best I can. In the hands of a more skilled tenor-player, like my teacher, it sounds magical. It's tuned C G D A like a tenor banjo.
