(06/08/09 9:05 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Tags : None Possibly wrong category here, but it relates to vintage wood: I want to travel from Minneapolis, MN to TJ's shop in MA with several large Honduras and possibly some Cuban mahogany planks. All this wood was cut in the 1920's, but I have no way of proving that. I'd like to take the most direct route, which would mean entering Canada around Detroit, traveling through Canada and entering the states again in Niagara, NY. I'm concerned that the customs folks might confiscate the wood, either entering Canada or when I enter back into the USA. Any thoughts/experiences here? I'd also be bringing some 20's rosewood guitars, etc. if this raises any red flags. Thanks for any information, Rob

The Cuban would not be an issue, but you would have to prove the species at the border. Maybe, if you declare that you are only traveling in and out, and not selling or delivering the wood into Canada, you would be waved thru, but I have no experience at all with border crossings. But you would need CITES certificates for the rosewood and ivory in the guitars. I would think that adding a few extra miles to your trip would be well worth it to avoid the aggravation and possible loss of your wood and guitars. Chris

I decided to stay south of the great lakes in the states from Minneapolis to Buffalo, NY, home of the Anchor Bar and the original Buffalo Wings so I'm told, then drop down toward TJ's. Though TJ will have a finished guitar (maybe) for me, I have never even seen one of his instruments first hand. I don't know if there is one in the state of Minnesota. I'll be pretty anxious to see his shop. Thanks for all your thoughts on this. Rob

They are both listed on Appendix II of the CITES Treaty. And, the US Lacey Act, which was also mentioned above, is now also of concern when transporting any foreign species into the US. You must be able to prove it was legally logged.

I realize international travel is a reality and necessity for some. Thankfully, I can avoid it almost entirely. Todd

I'll be pretty anxious to see his shop.< I'll echo Rank Stranger's post, and say you're in for SEVERAL real treats! TJ's instruments are really on a whole 'nother level, in pretty much every respect. I suspect you'll find that your first 5 minutes seeing and playing your guitar will be a real high point, and make you glad you made the trip! His shop is another high point for anyone w/ interest in the history of '30's Martins. You'll find yourself in the presence of some amazing history and music-craft. And TJ is a charming host, and pretty highly-evolved human. You'll definitely enjoy your time spent with him.
