I've been saving for a new Martin... from time to time thinking I should go custom (even then, not exactly sure what I'd ask for)
I certainly expect that the good folks on this forum will have many differing opinions... but I think that can only add to breadth of my own thoughts.
My primary guitar now is a 1966 D-28 brazilian, that I would not part with.... but if you, in addition, were to choose THE ONE, that you would never sell, and would hand down to your children or grandchildren, what would you choose?
My priorities:
1. Tone. This is far and away the most important factor. Clarity. No mush. Ring forever. Balance. ... and more.
2. Playability. I sometimes feel as if my D-28 is a part of my body. Of course I'm very used to it, but it often seems to be encouraging me to play better (as some guitars will), rather than working against me in some way.
3. I use my fingers 80-85% of the time. Using a thumb pick for most of that, and metal fingerpicks for the really fast right hand percussive stuff. Flat pick strumming for the rest.
3. I have relatively short fingers, so I'm a little worried, (but not very worried), about switching between 1 11/16 and 1 3/4 nuts.. and 1/8 or so differences in string spacing.
4. I like the modified v neck profile.
5. Beautiful woods. I don't really like a lot of bling. Tasteful understatement is one of the things I love about Martin.
A couple of months ago I was going to buy an OM-28v. I think I only found three total to try, and none of these really spoke to me. Thereafter, I began to think I would need to go custom... but the additional expense does make me think again that Martin probably does already manufacture the guitar I'm looking for.
So let the opinions flow. I'll appreciate any and all thoughts.
Best to all,
Robert
