I began playing guitar about 50 years ago, and due to the influence at the time of the Kingston Trio, I felt that a Martin guitar had to be utopia! Unfortunately, as a teenager at that time, I couldn't convince my parents of the need for a Martin, and I settled for a Gibson J45. That Gibson served me well for quite a few years (in spite of many dings and cracks) until 1984 I happened into a music shop that was having a "going out of business" sale and I found THE HD28 that has been my sidekick for all the years afterward. So NOW I'm the proud owner of both the J45 and the HD28 - both of which still get frequent attention inspite of occasional lapses in interest, and they have satisfied my guitar lust for quite a few years. (Not to mention the Fender Strat I had for a couple of years...but that's a different ballgame!) The point of my observation...since hanging around here I feel the NEED to aquire multiple models of Martins...I wanna try 'em all! I've gone from being content with my meager collection, to lusting after every new model I read about. AAAAARRGH! This place is a BAAAAAAD place to hang out!...but I sure do learn lots of neat things about my guitars!

I'm not sure how my experience meshes with your story but I too was influenced by the Kingston Trio and started playing about 50 years ago. Like you, my first guitar was a J45 Gibson but I traded it a year or two later for a used D21. Since then I've been a "Martin addict" but . . . . lately I've been lusting for an old Gibson J45. Since you are one of us we can reveal "The Secret". The trick is to amass at least a half-dozen guitars. (You are on your own there.) After you have collected those guitars, buying and selling becomes quite easy. Your wife won't know what's going on. She will say, "Honey, is that a new guitar?" And you say, "This thing? I've had it for a long time." Please don't let your wife in on "The Secret". No, you don't need a trip to the water closet. What you need, unfortunately, is a fat wallet. Enjoy the hunt. I love going to music stores and just pulling guitars off the wall and sitting down with them. This forum, and others like it, re-kindled that enjoyment for me in recent years. Now I know a whole lot more than I did before. I don't play any better, but my enjoyment of the product is definitely enhanced. Oh, and by the way, GAS is by no means restricted to Martins. It was all the cash I could scrape up. In 63' I saved up enough to trade in the Gibson for a new D-18. In 64" I saved up enough to trade in the D-18 for a new D-28 which I still own today. In hind site I sure wish I could have kept the B-25 and the D-18, but such is life. Because of the forum I now own 6 martins and have bought 4 LXM's to give to grand kids. Your are spot on; this place is poison to your wallet. Jim

Lies, deception and sneakery are not good things. There will be a point at which the spouse thinks you have too many guitars, and once that happens, it's unwise to go beyond that number. (This assumes you are on good terms with your spouse.) In our house, we call it the "Case Count," and it has been unofficially set to remain indefinitely at three. If a new guitar comes in, one must go out. I'm cool with it, because we don't have space for more cases than that! (I say "indefinitely" because if we win the lottery or get a windfall from a rich uncle, well, anything is possible.) Somehow, I've managed to keep the Case Count restriction to apply to "regular" guitars only... So, if you can figure out a strategy for allowing oddities in beyond that, the possibilities are limitless. Notice that I don't include the Felix (it's a travel guitar that will be the kids' someday!), the mandolin (it's not even a guitar!) and the stratocaster (bought new when I was 14!) in the case count. It is therefore critically important to develop your Multiple Martin Rationale to get you to the point of owning a half dozen or so, so you can start swapping out with relative impunity, being careful to use your workplace address for shipping of course. The thing about a rationale is that it needs to sound plausible to the receiving party, though it need not actually make much sense. OK, so you already have the HD28 [1] and while that's all the Martin you will ever really need, never admit it, instead, (serially) observe that... Obviously you need a 12 string, because well, when you want that sound, there is no substitute [2] And, really you should add a small body wider-neck model for finger-picking / couch noodling [3] Then, float the idea of a birth-year guitar ('made the same year I was, honey') which can have surprising emotional appeal; choose carefully as this one'll be hard to swap out [4] An inexpensive campfire-road-worthy-playing-out-semi-beater is very practical so as not to risk damage to any of the finer ones you already have - its really a cheap insurance policy [5] and for those romantic Willie Nelson serenade moments, a nylon string [6] ...by which time, the music room is full of cases, and you have a bunch of other stuff - music stand, piles of sheet music, tuners, an amp or maybe a small PA, mics, guitar stands and so forth, so guitars coming and going are hardly noticeable at all, and can be hidden in plain sight! How that little GAS bubble grows from one... to another... to another... the case theory is a good one, as is Chris' advice to keep one's sweet spouse in the loop. The hunt is indeed a lot of fun... frequent visits to Buy and Sell One un-mentioned strategy I recently discovered was just buying a new case; when the Big Brown Truck dropped off a Big Brown Box, I got "the look", and hastily opened the box in front of her. "What's in there?" she asked. When I opened the cardboard, a tweed case appeared. "That's ugly. What's inside?" I opened the case, and went nuts. "Where's the guitar? They were supposed to include a used Martin. There's gonna be hell to pay!" After this fake tirade, I fessed up; she knows, without question, that I'm a Martin nut-case, and have been since just before we met. She also knows that if I'm playing music, I'm too busy to be chasing other skirts. She also knows that well-cared for Martins don't depreciate too terribly and if times get tough, we'll get through it together, with or without these fantastic guitars. Who else would understand why I need multiple guitars? There are several schemes for developing a rationale: 1) One guitar per decade - If I didn't follow that, I could be overrun quickly, as I can always justify another "investment." 2) One guitar for each tuning - no good for me, I only use two. 3) One guitar for each tonewood/top wood combination - I'd need more space for my "investments." 4) One guitar for each body size/style - Combining 1) & 4) is my present system 5) One Martin, one Gibson, one Martin, one Guild, one Martin, one Taylor, etc... - just for research 6) Any other plan Or, you could look at your pair, and say, "These make me happy! The "one case in, one case out" idea sounds feasible...I DO have an old nylon string baby around here somewhere. I don't think it's worth much (ever heard of a Framus? Made in Germany, I believe) but maybe if that case made an appearance for awhile, and then disappeared the new case wouldn't be toooooo noticed! Ahhhh...so many ways to get in trouble with the wife!! I WOULD love to get my hands on something in the 18 series...

Since then I've bought and sold well over two dozen Martins, Gibsons, and Guilds. People here will MAKE you buy stuff...just do it in a way that works for you. The rule here is that the guitar thing has to pay for itself...anything I buy must be paid for by a sale, gig, or some such income. However, recently, my wife pointed out to me that I usually make a better profit on guitars then the interest rate the bank pays on savings, and encouraged me to start doing a buy-sell thing more actively. The accrued profits can add up to a nice new unit pretty quickly. Having said that, a D-28 and a J45 are really about all the guitars a guy needs...except for a nice 12 string and a bass and....
