My '81 HD-28 is in the shop for similar treatment. The wait has been very long, but I suspect the reward will be great - such as you are enjoying with your
D-28. You should be "set" for life now. (That was bad...I should just go to bed now.)

Congrats Dave!...I like the tuners. How do they compare to the Waverlies that seem to be the holy grail of tuners in this forum?

Dave,
I have a 1971 D-28 as well, and I have to agree that the EIR on those early models has been underrated. I just had mine checked out by my luthier, Dave Bland of Siesta Key Guitars, and he thought we didn't need to do anything except take her home and keep playing. That's the guitar version of a surgeon saying you don't need an operation. Rich |

Looks great Dave. I just had a neck reset and new frets on my HD28. Its a 1994 and I am very happy with the result. Not so happy that it is only 15 years but
thought I would enjoy it more if it was done.
So how are the grovers sta tites and what strings are you using? |

geat Dave! In replacing the Rotomatics, were the holes bigger than the bushings for the new Grovers?

The Grover Statite 18:1 Vintage tuners are different from the Grover Statite 14:1 Vintage tuners in more ways than the ratio. The construction seems to be top
notch, with smooth action. Having just put them on I haven't done a gig with them, so I'll report further in a couple weeks. The 18:1 Statites have a
slightly different base than the 14:1 set. Interestingly, the post height varies on these two models of tuners and from that of the Waverly tuners, with the
14:1 Grovers having the tallest post (1.125"), Waverly (1.08"), and 18:1 Grovers at (1.045") giving them the shortest post, therefore the best
break angle.
They certainly are a visual improvement over the big old Rotomatics I've been looking at for the past 38 years! Tam - I use medium (.013-.056) phosphor bronze strings, lately the Martin MSP4200 strings, but for years and still going back and forth, I used the Ernie Ball Phosphor Studio Bronze (now called Power Slinky) in medium (.013-.056). NOTE: Regardless of what some manufacturers call them .012-.054 is NOT medium gauge! Dr. Richie - Has your '71 ever needed a neck reset yet? In replacing the Rotomatics, were the holes bigger than the bushings for the new Grovers?Yes. I used the Stewmac oversized bushings (#3457) made for this purpose. See this thread. http://theunofficialmartinguitarforum.yuku.com/topic/83348 Thanks All! It is great to have this beastie back in fighting prime!! A beautiful old axe, Dave (except that it's backwards)! It's a relief to know that if my '07 D28L goes as long before a reset as yours did,
I'll be 81 years old! Probably not going to even be an issue given my penchant for fast food and Budweiser (not to mention my 22 year smoking habit which I
kicked 4 years ago). LOL. Play that sucker good and hard! Rich

Congrats, Dave! You may remember that I got my '71 D-28 back from a similar treatment a month or so ago. I'm still amazed how much better it sounds!
Enjoy!

Dave: did you install the tuners yourself & if so, did you need to use the conversions bushings from StewMac to match up to the larger holes & the
smaller string post of the sta-tite's? I just bought an HD-16R & the things reeks vintage but it has the closed gear tuners & i want to upgrade to
exactly what you have installed!!! Congrats on the old D-28....she's good for another 38 yrs!!!

Johnny, as someone else asked above:
However, I was replacing old '70s Rotomatics. I suspect that the tuners you have on that HD-16R use much smaller holes, so while you might need a bushing, you'll need to get the correct one and not the #3457 (probably). When I put the Waverly tuners on my 0000-28H, the bushings that were supplied required a very, very slight reaming of the hole, then press fitting. I suspect that the same situation might apply to the Statites and your HD-16R. But look at the specs on Stewmac. It gives the dimensions. In replacing the Rotomatics, were the holes bigger than the bushings for the new Grovers?Yes. I used the Stewmac oversized bushings (#3457) made for this purpose. Johnny,
I did that last year, cleaning up 38 years of me chewing up the bottom of the sound hole. I did much investigation, correspondence and thought beforehand. It made the beast "punchier" is the best way to decribe it. Bryan Kimsey dubbed it the "Half-Tony"... since I only took about half out of what Tony's Grail had removed...
