I bought one used in '05 and am very happy with it although the action is a little high. It's beautiful to look at of course and really LOUD, I've read that these were a real hit with critics, but not so well received by players. What are your thoughts ? Dave

The 65 designation (indicating maple sides and back) is a little counterintuitive, as the 45 designation was intended to be the "ne plus ultra" Martin series. But there's nothing counterintuitive about a Martin maple 12-string. The maple gives the characteristic 12-string jangle even more shimmer. And Martin used particularly beautiful maple on many of its maple J's and M's. I'd love to have one of these in my collection, although I'm not sure how much use it would get, given my fondness for my new Grand J12-40E Special. Marshall

(06/20/09 10:29 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Hi Marshall, Well, I like that Martin at least tries to stay consistent with their model numbering once they choose something (don't get me started on my beloved Guild...), but the "6" is interesting there. It seems that most of the big guys have used "6" for maple lines. I wonder why that is. Anyway, with a Grand J sitting in your stable, you're going to be hard-pressed to spend much time with other 12s, so it seems. In my own case, I have 5 12ers, and the F-512 (Guild) is my go-to axe. That said, as much as I love the F-512, I do play the others a lot. My Ibanez 12, which is a magnificent mahogany dread, was my first guitar purchase and I remain attached to it. IN any case, I am enjoying trying lots of different string sets on my axes and listening intently to the tone changes those strings bring out. Besides the F-512, like other 17" jumbos, is a real beast. It's nice to have the diversity of size and tone. Over the years we've added an Imix pickup system, changed the saddle to bone and added ebony bridge pins with the dot on them. I've also changed the pick guard to a gold flake guard I bought from a forum member. The neck was reset in 2007 by Olde Town Pickin Parlor's repair shop under warranty and it plays "Like Buttah" The sound of this guitar has always been exceptional. Loud, clear, balanced, and just the right 12 string character, perfect intonation up the neck. The neck is comfortable and I've always had the guitar's action setup for fingerstyle playing so it's pretty low. I don't remember the numbers but it is pretty close to the factory Leo Kottke Taylor feel. I string the guitar with Dean Markely medium lights or d Addario EJ 38's. I switch the plain steel 10th A to a wound 3rd string to add some bass punch. We usually keep the guitar tuned down 2 or three half tones. Whenever I play this guitar at church or in public I get at least one and often several comments about how good the guitar sounds or how attractive the guitar is. My wife now schedules the guitar to be used for some songs we use in our worship services because she thinks it's easier for the congregation to sing with because of the full sound of the chords. The J12-65 is a endowed with much Martin karma. I think Maple was a favorite wood of CF Martin III. The CF Martin III guitar is made from maple. Chris Proctor has switched to a maple LKSM custom model. I've also seen a guitarist from the Northwest who plays a maple J12-65 that sounded incredible. I can't remember his name right now. I need to go look up the tape I bought at his show. Maple is a great wood for 12 strings and the Martin Jumbo size provides great balance and feel to a 12 string. These guitars are rarely available for resale because those who own them like them. Enjoy your J12-65. They are awesome instruments. If you think the action is high I would suggest having a Martin authorized luthier take a look at the setup. It may need a relief adjustment or saddle adjustment or it may need a neck reset.
