i wonder if someone at shot jackson's old guitar shop if it is still in business would have the schematic for the prismatone. I read that this was where
Willie got trigger and the prismatone pickup put in. I hear from guys who want to go back and make the pickup all the time when i post online but no one can
find them. I read where one of the muscisians who helped develop the prismatone died recently in the last couple of years. Also would modern plug in cords work
or woulld they have to have the special three cord one Willie talks about.? Love this thread and new section of the forum.

I have wondered for years how Willie is able to use a flatpick with the flat (non radiused) fretboard , bridge and nut on his N-20.

tim52160 wrote: I have posted this info before... The Baldwin Prismatone pu came out of Willie's smashed up Baldwin guitar, made by Harmony. Shot Jackson sent the pickup to Matt Umanov. Rick Turner made a new bridge for the used 1969 N-20 hanging on Umanov's wall to house the salvaged pickup. This cost Willie Nelson's manager $750. The work was done in New York, not Nashville. Neither Shot Jackson nor anyone at Hollywood Music worked on that guitar. Ovation bought 100 of those pickups and preamps. No one knows where they are today. Three of those pus made it into guitars; none of the preamps were used. Ovation found the Prismatone impractical - it kept tipping over - and invented their own. The special cord is used to connect the guitar to a Baldwin amp. If you used the Baldwin preamp, a regular chord would go from the preamp to your amp. A number of people have looked at reproducing the Prismatone. There are certainly enough of the units around, especially in Nashville. Fishman, Turner and others decided against it, opting for a recreation of the sound rather than the pu itself.

That's cool mike. T hat makes the story willie said jibe. there has been some private individuals who were interested inreproducing that ive spoken too but
didnt know how to get the schematics. So the big companys are trying to make pickups that can capture the same sound that comes from the prismatone. . That is
great news. i know everybody has something they want to sell but how many were actually close to the prismatones sound it what i was after. does willie's
preamp for the baldwin actually sit inside his guitar? i have a baldwin amp with one speaker in it. I see willie's has two speakers in it. I wondered if
it affects the sound much. Really cool to speak with someone who has the inside knowledge of this guitar that so many of us love the sound of.I really
appreciate the time and effort to reply in this thread. Mike. We just get to go on the interviews thru the years on the guitar and trying to get as close to
the sound as we can.It doesnt make learning to play on your own for us that work too much and either dont have th emoney or time to take lessons. The ones i
've tried just say willie doesnt know how to play on time and i know right there they're not as knowledgeable as they let on lol. Again, thanks mike
for this classical guitar forum and this thread.

There are some incredible photos of the second time Rick Turner replaced the bridge and pickup on Trigger in String Letter Publishing's Acoustic Guitar
Owner's Manual in Rick's article "Bridge Repairs." This was relatively recent, based on the size of the hole. The first shot shows
half of the bridge dangling by the strings. The second shows the new bridge prior to him reinstalling the Prismatone. Mike, was this when you got to play it?
Tim, there's a fairly recent thread in DTAR's forum (which should be called the Ask-Rick-Turner-a-Question Forum) that you would find interesting. It's titled "new gut string pickup." Rick discusses the reasons that he feels there is no market for such a pickup. He says, "the 'market' wants pickups that can be hid in Martin and Gibson bridges," and "nobody wants to buy pickups that don't just drop into a 3/32" or 1/8" slot." Of course those of us who want one really, really want one, but I guess there's just not enough of us. My N-20 Custom (really an N-20WN minus) came without a pickup. I've been through Martin and Fishman about reproducing the pickup they put in the 1999 signature series. It's a lost cause. Until a Prismatone magically appears, I'm following Mike's advice to me months ago to go with a piezo crystal UST. If your amp has the Supersound section and one speaker, it's a D1 Deluxe. Willie's is a C1 Custom, essentially the same but with two twelve-inch speakers and a little more power. I was using a Baldwin C3 (sort of a smaller version of the Exterminator Neil Young uses), then found an almost pristine D1 a few weeks ago. But this week I got a C1 that even still has the vinyl cover! It's only been home since Tuesday, but it's in excellent shape. My Les Paul sounds great through it. Now I really want that pickup. Rick and I talk on occasion. I will ask about this next week.
Mark, I have two Gibson crystal pickups sitting in Brazilian rosewood bridges. It is time to thin the herd and I will be offering both in the Buy and Sell soon. One has a free C-0-E attached to it (unplayable beyond 3 frets without a neck reset) possibly the only one ever built. It has a C-L neck indicating 1967 - 70 and further indicating a one-off, floor sweep or employee salvage. I don't see the collectors lining up for it, though. The other is sitting in a nice, playable stock C-1-E. Either guitar would need a new bridge if the PU was removed.

A gentleman named Sam Kennedy has been working on the Prismatone II pickup project for the past 2 years. As I understand it, Sam is going to officially
introduce it to the public, with retail and dealer pricing at this years CAAS Convention July 8-11 in Nashville. If you're interested, I'll have more
info on it when I get back.

Since i am learning on my own. should i just learn to play good in one key. Then learn to play in other keys once i get adept at playing. You know, just
convert all the songs to that key ? in other words C D G or E A D or F B C Till i can get s good grasp of the concepts? I've ben playing very amaturish for
decades [since i was about 18 on and off} and also just one tempo or speed? .Glad I've really found some great guys to learn from here even if i am way
,way ,waaaaaaay out of my league. Just love that sound so much.. thanks in advance guys.

Bill, thanks for that information. Yes, please give us a report after the convention. I did a search on Prismatone II that took me to the CAAS website and
discussion forum. Guys, there's a couple of threads there with additional information and a couple of pictures of the reproduction Prismatone II.
tim52160, I used to be a fairly observant guy. Sorry, I didn't notice that was your thread at DTAR! Mike, PM sent. Mark |

MVSarles wrote:I talked with Sam Kennedy at CAAS, and got to see and hear his new Prismatone II pick up. Folks, it's the real deal. The price is $400 for just the pick up, or $500 for the pick up with pre-amp. (Sam tells me the pick up will work with any preamp) If you would like Sam's email address and/or phone number, pm me. Disclaimer: I have no affiliation whatsoever with Sam Kennedy and his Prismatone II pick up. Here are a couple photos I shot...

$15K for the EIR version? That is way too funny.
For $6,000, one can buy the '69 from Gruhn and a Prismatone II from Sam Kennedy. I don't know what Rick Turner would charge to make the bridge but I could ask.
