OK, I unpacked it an hour ago and just put it down... I'm surprised at how thin the low profile neck is. Not sure if it's for me (I'm accustomed to the modified low oval of my 000). Any low profile guys aboard today? Will I get used to it? We seem to be VERY sensitive to small changes, and somehow seem to start reprogramming for those differences as we adapt. I am less concerned with the neck profile than I am with the nut width & string spacing. I adjust easily to different neck profiles themselves! The can play it, can't play it thing is not as real as we percieve. There are exceptions of course, given physical conditions that players may have. But to the average player, I don't think it's a problem going from one neck profile to another. I have all the current neck profiles I think except those on the "A"s. I find that I can play all of them equally given a few minutes of warm up. OTOH: What is real, is your preference, should you have one. You may naturally prefer one neck over the others. I know that I do. The low oval is my favorite probably because I have spent more time with it than any other. The guitars I play most at this time all have Mod V necks. I play these guitars most because I like the sound and features that they have. I have one LP neck at this time and I play it less than the others but it's not the neck that places this guitar last in the order. If you love everything else about the guitar, give the neck a little time. I would bet you'll get used to it just fine. k Last Edited By: kcoyner 06/17/09 12:44 PM. Edited 1 times.

I've switched easily to low profile necks (same width), VERY mod V neck (different brand same width) and slightly fatter Guild neck (same width). I've played mod low oval in stores and could probably get used to them although I don't care for the 1 3/4" width. In short, I suspect you will do just fine! Love that guitar! I adjust easily to different neck profiles themselves! For me it's the other way around. Plus. I easily adapt to nut widths anywhere between 1 5/8" and 2". I even adjust relatively easily to any thickness or depth between a very low profile and a baseball bat neck. It's the V-profile I can't stand. From a player's perspective, it still doesn't make sense to me. And structurally (in the "modern" truss-rod world) it doesn't, either. I do own a couple of Martins that have it, though. Tone was the motive. (Yeah I know, it's the V-profile that's responsible for that tone ). But I regularly curse that darn ridge. Henk

Are you saying the low profile neck seems thinner than the modified low oval neck? I have an HD-28 (low profile neck) and a Martin DSR (modified low oval neck) and to me the modified low oval neck is much thinner than the low profile neck. What type of 000 do you have? Are the nut widths the same on both guitars? I measured the back of the neck of my low profile and my modified low oval and the modified low oval had less distance fret to fret on about the 3,4,and 5 fret areas compared to the low profile. The circumference of my 000-16GT's neck is greater than the J-40, which startled me, given that the 000 is such a smaller guitar. The 000's neck is a little bigger around -- a little more bulky in the back, if you will. The nut width is identical -- 1 11/16, as is the scale -- 25.4.

If you look at the neck profile cutaways on the Martin website, it looks to me (especially at the 10th fret cutaway) that the low profile has less meat that the mod low oval. And that had always been my impression. But I've been wrong before. From the nut cutaway pics, it looks like they might have used a cutaway from the 1 3/4" for the low profile and the 1 11/16" for the mod low oval. I just got an OM-45 Tasmanian Blackwood 2 weeks ago, 1-3/4"nut and "low profile".....................I love it!!!!!! I know I have tolerated the Mod V profile because about every Martin I love comes with it but it has been a love/hate relationship for years, give me a wide nut and low profile any day! So, give you new guitar some time, it will probably grow on you. Note, I have small hands the Mod V is a work out for me on some chord positions, not so with the low profile! After a few hours I'm totally comfortable with the low profile (my 000 feels like a tree trunk now). I'm just wishing the action was a little lower.
