Mike Dowling resophnic hotplate system - anyone tried it? |

Hi there, as the title says - anyone tried one? I'm wondering if the balance between nickel and bronze is an issue. No surprise it's not mentioned on
the websight so i thought i'd check out a subjective viewpoint before i part with the 300+dollars. I'm looking for a pickup for my National style
single cone and Dobro - if there are any other suggestions.

Steve, these hotplates work great if you don't want the "cone-tone". You will get lot's of sustain, it works like a regular passive PU. If
you want the "cone-tone" you need to install a Highlander PU in the bridge.

00045 - yeah i guessed i wouldn't get the cone-tone. my main worry is the b string. drives me crazy if it's not balanced

OSteve wrote:Steve, I don't currently own a resonator of any sort, but my preference was always nickel strings, so that would not be an impediment in getting balanced magnetic tone. However, you can always gets some thin lead tape and place varying amounts under the E & B strings if you're stuck on the bronze strings. Of course if I were going to amplify a reso again, I'd do it pretty much the same way I did when I owned a square neck Dobro from the Mosrite era: I fastioned a Barcus Berry to the spider with two machine screws and ran it right to the built in volume control that remained after I ditched the 'P-90' that came with the instrument. An outboard preamp did the trick after that. By the way: A magnetic pickup won't really do much for increasing the sustain of the instrument. However long the strings ring, especially the fundamental tone, is pretty much determined by the instrument itself. Biscuit style instruments sustain much less than spiders do, but that's the point, right? They get great 'pop'! Best, Howard http://www.howardemerson.com/ |
