I tried it, and found it a little too bright/harsh on an already bright guitar. Switched to water buffalo horn, and it's perfect. Not a whole lot
different than ebony, maybe slightly fuller sounding.

Johnny, while my 1976 D-18 was having its neck reset and a new bridge and plate installed, the luthier suggested I try bone pins, so I ordered a set of buffalo
horn from Bob Colosi (sonically similar to bone but black like ebony) that he used with a set of Martin 4150 PBs.
After a couple of days of this combination I simply couldn't stand the tinniness of the tone any more and switched out the horn for my old ebony pins and restrung the box with Pearse 80/20s. Life was once again good. Now, my experience is absolutely useless to answering your question since I can't differentiate btwn the effects of the PB strings, or the horn pins, or the combination of both in creating the level of tinniness I heard. But you've got me curious, and this weekend I'll swap out the ebonies for the buffalo horns using the same strings that are on it now and do an A/B. (And then there's the old Neil Young trick of using half and half, three of each, but of course he's on rosewood.) Dave |

Dave: Larry Cragg, Neil Young's guitar tech since forever uses ebony pins on the bass strings & horn on the trebs, but i do just the opposite & it
sounds really good on my Martin's. The buffalo horn gives a nice woody tone to the bass strings that bone makes shimmer & the ebony pins give that nice
warm ring on the trebles that i love so much from a martin guitar. Give it a try this weekend & let me know what you think......i use horn pins in all my
hog guitars but i haven't tried them in a rosewood Martin as of yet, but Young's 1940"s D-28 sounds real good with that set up!!!!

Bone might be a little harsh on a hog but Buffalo Horn sounds great on my D-18.

No, plastic or ebony is just fine with mahogany. As somebody's strap-line says, "Jest play yer geetar".

I use Willi's high density pins in my '52 D-18 and I just love them. Dennis Berck made the suggestion and I had him slot the bridge and fill and
redrill a bit of wear on the bridgeplate. Nothing serious there. It was a totally different guitar when it came back. I"m having the same pins put in
another D-18 he is just about to return. I don't find the pins make the sound shrill or thin at all. In fact it sounds a lot like my Authentic to be
honest. Not sure if it's just this guitar, but will know when the next one comes back.

Yeah, I like bone pins on my mahogany Guild. I changed out from plastic, then ebony, then buffalo horn, and now bone. I slotted the bridge and bought
unslotted bone pins from Bob Colosi and they work just wonderfully with the string / pick combination that I use.

I wanted to replace the "original" mismatched pins that came w/my '35 0-17, so I foolishly bought bone. Looked nice, but made it sound like a
National. Since then I went to ebony and buffalo horn. Both work equally well for pulling out that soft/smokey tone of Hog. Makes me want to go home and take
her out for a spin

I'm using wood pins ( a light colored wood, like maple) and they produce a full and balanced sound.

I'm using wood pinsDitto. After dropping about $70 between a set of bone and horn pins, my D18 sounds best with a set of $11 Snakewood pins from Stew-Mac. Tom |

I like snakewood a lot. In addition to pins, I've used it for strap buttons and end pins. To me it looks classy and does both jobs.

Give it a try this weekend & let me know what you think......Well, I must say I did not expect to actually hear much difference, but in fact I noticed a very pronounced increase in the tightness and clarity (and perhaps volume?) when I switched my standard ebony pins to buffalo horn using the same set of strings. I tried the 3+3 but then swapped them all. It is a very nice sound, certainly different than with all ebony, but not necessarily better...I still like the nice warm sharp thump I get with the black wooden pins But I'll enjoy these horns too. Thanks Johnny! |

I have some mahogany guitars. One with bone (no dots), one with ebony (abalone dots), one with FWI (black dots) and one with black buffalo horn (no dots).
The FWI with black dots look the best to me. Sometimes, the bone is just a little too plain looking.

I like buffalo horn pins for a bit of extra clarity and focus, and ebony pins to preserve the woody tone of a light, resonant guitar. I agree with you that
they sound different, though it's hard to say which sounds "better."

Tried buffalo horn pins, ebony, bone, etc, as have many above. My personal preference has ended up with FWJ on my '68 00-18 and FWI on '51 D-18. Plenty
of low-end growl, not "tinny", good sustain & definition. Put FWI in my now-gone '42 0-15, liked that too. Those pins now on one of my
sons' guitars. I like ebony best on '54 5-18 though. De gustibus non disputandum est.

Started with plastic in my all hog Martin then went to buffalo horn then ebony now I have been using bone pins. To be honest the bone pins sound pretty good.
I'm not sure if there is a big enough difference other than with the plastic. The biggest improvement came from replacing the tusq saddle with a
fossilized walrus ivory saddle that made the biggest tone improvement. To me besides plastic the pins there was to small a change from bone, buffalo,or ebony
for me to pick up.
