Maybe a reissue of a D-76. Might it sell?

I always felt the Elvis should have been a signature Model also. I don't think he has left the building. Mike

There is an Elvis, Jim Croce, Woody Guthrie, Johnny Cash. Plently of examples of Signature models done posthumously. OK Artist's Model if we insist.

I remember seeing a zoned-out John Fahey many years ago at Club Passim and he played a couple of old Martin dreads.
The guitar I would get if I wanted a "Fahey" model would be this one being worked out by Tony Klassen at New Era Guitars: B&D Senorita Rhinestones and engraved mother-of-toilet-seat. What a combo ! Somebody posted a video not too long ago of Fahey playing that Bacon and Day. |

I have a tremendous respect for Fahey. I'd love to hear what he'd have to say about a signature model Martin. I wouldn't want to guess what
he'd come out with.

A John Fahey signature would definitely have to be a Bacon and Day or a Recording King. The D-76 came 18 years later, well after his prime and most of his
truly great work. Although he poses with that D-76 on his "Best Of" in '77 and did play it for a few years, not a tune on that "Best
Of" was recorded on a Martin and t hat never really was his main sound.

Get a D28 and you'll have one of his models. However, if you want, Martin will add some bells and whistles, slap some poor scmoe of a relative's
signature on it and be very happy to triple the price for you.

I'm no Fahey expert, but didn't he play a D-35 for some time?

Sometimes a D-35, sometimes a D-76. He went through many guitars.

And most memorably, a Bacon&Day. But I have to cop to being confused*. How come they get to call it a "signature" model if the guy is dead? And
how do they get him to sign it?
*not for the first time, and not for the last, either

Davids Harp wrote:Below is the Jim Croce signature model link; the guitar is a commemorative model. Other example exist as well, Hank Williams Sr., Clarence White, , Woodie Guthrie, and Roy Rogers to name a few. The Custom Artists Series seem to be grouped in the signature model cateory as well. I'm really not sure what the rhyme and reason but it does seem to include all Artist's models. As far as signing, I suspect and inlaid (or printed) signature could be done posthumously. How come they get to call it a "signature" model if the guy is dead? I like to think of it as just one more of those mysteries of life... ... such as just how did Jimi Hendrix release more albums in the 80's, 90's, and 00's after he died so young in 1970... |

I am a HUGE John Faney fan. The Bacon & Day has to be the coolest guitar I have ever come across! The New Era Senorita will be finished in about 2 months.
Here are some progress photos. The neck is at the banjo makers getting it's fancy engraving done. I am very excited about this project! I have often
wondered if Fahey would have wanted a signature model?.....

I once saw a You Tube clip of John Fahey on a cable access show from the 60's and he used his soundhole as an ashtray and the female host of the show was
mortified. Was he "out there"? Absolutely. Eccentric? Without a doubt. Pure Genius? Positively. As the owner of a Martin D-35 which he played from
time to time, a Martin model honoring one of the true pioneers of the steel string solo guitar would be a fitting tribute. I discovered John Fahey after I
discovered Leo Kottke. Here's what Leo had to say about John Fahey shortly after he died from complications of heart by-pass surgery several years ago:
"In a country full of crap, John created living, generative culture. With his guitar and his spellbound witness, he synthesized all the strains in American music and found a new happiness for all of us. With John, we have a voice only he could have given us; without him, no one will sound the same." |
