What about the 000-18A? |

The forum is full of threads about the D-18A, and passionate owners; I am one. By comparison there seems far less enthusiasm for the 000-18A. No disrespect
meant for the 000-18A or those who own one, but did Martin miss the mark with the 000? I have only played one, and it didn't grab me. I had the same
initial response with a D-18A, and later bought one.

I have a D-18A and a 000-18A. I bought the D-18A first. When I first tried one, I couldn't believe how loud and "unfiltered" it was compared to
other great dreads. However, the neck put me off. Later, I found one where the strings just blended perfectly and the low E sounded like a piano. Nothing came
close from the 5th fret down. A lot of other guitars were in the ball park or even better from the 5th fret up. However, I realized that a lot of dread playing
I do is in the first position and bought it. Couldn't be happier.
A year later, I had a line an opportunity to buy a used D-18A in pristine condition. It did not have the low end of the D-18A, but had an extremely balanced and lively response all the way up the neck. I traded for it. I use the dread with a pick and the 000 with a thumbpick and really like how my right hand doesn't have to adjust much depending on the guitar. Also, it has bloomed into having a huge low end; almost like a subwoofer. It's low end equals the D-18, but without the depth of a dread. It is easily my favorite guitar right now. It's weird, but other guitars sound slightly muffled to me after owning these two. I think one reason that the 000 doesn't get as much publicity is that a lot of folks who play them prefer the sound of a cheap frontporch blues guitar. Otherwise, they go for a pristine sound of an OM. To me, the 000 is sweet and articulate. I haven't found another 000 that compares. |

Authentic! | ||

Hi James;
I made my way over to Dusty Strings in Seattle to give the 000-18A a try and was really knocked-out!!! Amoung their huge selection of high-end guitars they also have an excellent 000-18NBlake, and a simply stunning OM-18GE as well, so I was treated to A-B'ing them. Together with Dan - one of Dusty's great salesman, I got all the other Martin 000's and OM's as well as Colling's 000/L00 models out, and put them up against each other - What a treat that was! Dusty Strings is THE BEST btw. Both of our opinions ended-up: there was absolutely NOTHING that had the presence and articulation as the Authentic, including sheer volume. The other guitars were each (in there own way) top-quality and worthy of owning, but the "magic" was with the 000-18A clearly - and that was assessed being "in front" of them all, as well as "behind" while being played. Dan faithfully played each - picking and strumming the same song - and we were pleased as you can be when it came time to let the Authentic out for a stroll. I did my best to do such wonderful instruments right, and went away "haunted", of course! I want........... - Sunny |

Some have said the difference between the D-18A and D-18GE is more pronounced than the difference between the 000-18A and the 000-18GE. Thoughts?

Just to clear up, my first reference to the used guitar that I bought, in the second paragraph, should have been to the 000-18A, not the D-18A.
I have found the difference to be just as pronounced. I have also found that the breaking in period has made a really big difference. I wonder if the glue has something to do with how it has progressed? |

I only wish the 000-18A was an OM ..
I would have preferred the longer scale length. Can you imagine the cut-through volume of an OM-18A ?? mmmm I wonder if I could order one that way, and what would be the up-charge? ima |

Is the bracing different on the 000-18A than the standard?

I have owned one for a little over a week now, and played it with other musicians for the first time ever this morning -- it is now my single favorite guitar!

+1 what om28vr Dave said. In two weeks the 000-18A has become one of my favorite guitars.

I'm coming up on my first year with my 000-18ASB and it is a pretty cool guitar. I do wish it was long scale. Sound-wise it is pretty incredible. I really
wasn't crazy about my 000-18GE (as it opened up it got bassier and bassier and bassier), but I'm really liking my 000-18A. I has already beat my old
000-18GE by 3 months. That has got to be a good sign.
