My question about the neck weight was unwarranted - the guitar balanced normally. The neck had an interesting texture to it, but I'm sure it'd smooth right out with playing. Nice looking naked spruce with reasonably tight and even grain. I do have to wonder about the top. Even though they call it satin finish, it seems like it would take to dirt pretty quickly, almost appearing like raw wood. Sounded really nice!! Good volume, good tone, plenty of bass. So for 60% off list putting it at around $720, that's gotta be the best deal you're likely to see on a solid body Martin. Whether or not you like it better than a 15 Series spruce top (ala MF & GC "custom" for almost the same price) will be a personal decision. I think the wood neck (15) versus the Statabond neck (1) might end up being the preferential decider for many folks. Mahogany is getting rare, heading for CITES listing if it isn't there already. 2. Supplies will be limited in the future. 3. Every 15-model top is a hunk of wood unavailable for the back of some other guitar. 4. Every 15-model neck is a hunk of wood unavailable for the neck of some other guitar. 5. Spruce on the other hand seems to be available. 6. Solution 1. Minimize mahogany tops. 7. Solution 2. Minimize mahogany necks. 8. A possible summation: "Hey kids, what if we came up with a guitar that used lower-grade mahogany for back and sides, nice spruce for the top, and a multi-part plywood neck? And let that be our first-level solid-wood offering. Then we'd have lots more nice mahogany for bodies and necks of higher-grade guitars!" Or maybe not. I am absolutely happy that I got my D-16GT for a great price very recently, with very nicely-grained mahogany back and sides, and what appears to be a Mahogany neck as well. The slight upcharge compared to a 1-series was so worth it for me. However, this entry-level solid-wood guitar is an excellent choice, also marketing-wise, to compete with similar Taylor product in order to reach less-traditional younger buyers... It's a cool sounding little guitar and I have no problem taking it on the boat with me. It's gonna be sad to see hog go away from a lot of guitars but, the industry will figure something out. Who's to say Braz and hog are the best? Perhaps the "perfect" tonewood for backs and sides hasn't been used yet. In another hundred years, traditionalists might be harping the virtues of australian pine. (I know that's a stretch but a point is being made) Now, on to more time on "Arkansas Traveller". Check the 15 owners thread sometime and you'll understand why they continue that line. I wouldn't trade my 00-15 for most 16 series guitars. It's not better, it's just different.

However, I would estimate a switch to all-sapele for this sometime soon, and also the same for the 16-series perhaps. Does it make a tonal difference ? A slight one at most, to me. You have to take sapele or mahogany pot luck. Stratabond neck fan here. My only gripe with them is that I can't get a chunkier one. I'd totally buy an "Authentic" spec guitar with stratabond neck, red spruce top and mahogany laminate backs and sides--if the tone was there and the price was right. I mean the original can be had for even less than the new D-1, and with better quality woods. That stratabond neck would be a deal breaker to me. It was a great-sounding and playing guitar, solid and nice-quality Sitka top with a smooth satin finish, solid mahogany back, laminate sides, rosewood fingerboard and bridge, and I believe a mahogany neck as well. From everything I've read, the cutaway isn't really going to change the sound much. No comparison to a D-28. It doesn't have the richness nor volume I normally associate with a D-28, but it is using a different bracing system and it is mahogany. If you're going to compare to a Standard, use the D-18, but still it isn't in the same league. It's thumpier without the cut. Visually there is no comparison. I hate to use the phrase, but it is what it is. (06/08/09 2:07 PM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	I would have been highly surprised if your comparative assessment had been anything different from what you said, but I was hopeful and still may be that this could be a nice back-up performance guitar. However, it could be that once a D-28 becomes your standard performance guitar (as in my case albeit a DC-28E), these 1 series guitar just don't or won't stack up. Guess I was hoping for some type of diamond in the rough deal as opposed to a great starter guitar. Like you said, I'm sure it has its place for what it is.
