Look at this old turtle! |

Does anyone know what the legal aspects of owning something like this are? IT IS NOT MINE! I saw it at an antique flea market and thought, wow, is that legal
and secondly.... look at all the picks!

I dont know anything about the legality. Maybe our resident lawyer (JT) will chime in . Brian , just out of curiosity , how much were they asking for it? I
will admit that when I am at flea markets I keep my eye out for old combs and whatnot , but seeing the animal like that in its whole form would make me think
differently about chopping it up for picks . They really are gorgeous animals .

Hey Sean, my Blackberry camera did no justice here. This animal was very beautiful. It was old, probably caught and stuffed a very long time ago. It was dried
out and brittle, many of the top shells were falling out, and it looked like somebody glued a main one back in.

Jeez, what a sad ending for a creature that Mother Nature designed to outlive all of us.

Legalities aside, if I had been there, it would be in my basement at this very moment.

I just saw one like that a couple weeks ago....in a showcase at the Calgary, Alberta Airport....showing illegal items. There were also alligator heads, eagle
feathers, and some funky stuff from the Orient, but that tortise was a thing of beauty.
I sure don't know if it'd be legal to own it, but you sure couldn't cross the border with it legally. |

I'd like to attach some styrofoam to the bottom of that sucker and float him in my pool., my lab puppy would have a ball with it ! |

Personally, I'd prefer it if they stuffed collectors and sold them at flea markets.

I don't know what kind of Turtle that is ... It looks like a sea turtle, but maybe it's not an endangered species.. Maybe it's at least legal to
own such a carcass... Who knows..
But .... I don't think Turtle shells make very good picks ... Now, their cousin, the Tortoise, ... his shell made darn good plectrums.... Just not for me ... (I use thumb-picks)

It's a hawksbill Turtle, an endangered sea turtle and the source of so-called "tortoise shell" guitar picks, as well as combs, eyeglass frames
and many other decorative items.
I saw one today, out fishing on the Sea of Cortez where I live. It's the fifth consecutive trip out on the water I've seen a turtle, my best streak in the 8 years I've been here. But when I was a kid, in the early 60s, I saw hundreds a day. Today they are still killed here for black market food, despite legal protections. Politicians especially like to eat turtle. (Really!) Legal netting and longlining kills far more, and beach development takes it's toll. They are listed as Schedule 1 on the CITES list, like Brazilian rosewood. I don't know local law but I know you cannot take them across the border and they do look for turtle products. |

Some more trivia:
Turtles live in the Sea and some in Fresh Water. Tortoises live on almost entirely on land. 200 Million+ years on the Planet - ain't a bad effort. Snowy |

Wow, .. I did not know that .... Thanks for the valuable information, Loreto and Buck.

What would something like this be worth?

in picks? There is no telling how many picks could be made from that . Maybe 200 plus ( hard to tell from a picture maybe a lot more ) at $20 each , but I
think thats were the legality issue pops up . I wish JT would weigh in on this . How much are they asking for this ?

As much as I hate to say this, that's so much more beautiful than a thousand picks could ever be. I've seen the hawksbill turtle before (underwater),
but for some reason, that stuffed version with a proverbial deli tray of picks on it's back really changes my perspective....Hmmmm.....

I'm someone who might like to try a real tortoise shell pick, but no way would I ever cut up that beautifully-preserved animal to make guitar picks.

"200 Million+ years on the Planet - ain't a bad effort."
Yeah but guitar players really need those picks so they - the Hawksbills - better watch their backs..............Literally. Maybe guitar weenies can get them to give up their shells for a nice Brooks Brothers suit and life on a government supplied reservation. Someplace near a nice oil rig where the propertiy values are down and no other sea life wishes to live. |

This old guy belongs in the ocean, not some shop. If my own 60+ years on this planet have taught me anything, it's that creatures like this turtle value
their lives as much as we value ours. Probably even more than we value our flatpicks.
