A really BIG Larson Bros. guitar! |
Lead | |
|
There is a 19" wide Prairie State guitar on
eBay. It's got a pearl trimmed spruce top, with f holes, over flamed maple back and sides. There are laminated x-braces and the internal tension tube.
They don't say if there is one or two tubes. They note that the neck is laminated, and that the guitar has no case. No big surprise there! They mention
repairs to the top and the back, but it isn't clear to what needs to be done versus what has already been done. This is one BIG guitar!

A beauty! It's nice to see one of these that, unlike the Prairie State that Stefan Grossman played, has not been retopped as a round hole guitar.
The seller, Dan Alexander, has a substantial Larson collection and maintains this Larson Guitars site.

That's Dan Alexander, he used to have a Larson website, but I think it went defunct. He knows Larsons.

I guess somebody really wanted this guitar. You generally don't see them selling that quickly on eBay. You know, these days they linger, and
linger. I don't know how much credit I can take for the sale. Dan Alexander sent me an email that was a response to a query I had sent him in July of 2008.
I suspect he sent them out to everyone who had ever emailed him about a Larson. I was looking forward to hearing what people had to say about this one. To me
the cracks looked like major flaws. But I guess when it comes to 19" guitar people are willing to put up with a lot.

I thought the price very good for a 19 in., pearly Larson, but refrained from making that observation out of fear that someone who had never played such a
guitar might shout out that it could not possibly possess $16K worth of tone and had no hope of comparing favorably with a Gibson L-50.

I don't believe I've ever seen a guitar with pearl binding on the f-holes.
Okay, I've never even imagined one! I can just imagine a club musician or touring pro wandering into a music store back in the day and his eyes lit up and he knew he had to have it! Yeah the cracks show, but as the seller indicates, there are repair artists out there such as Mr. Montuoro who can take them in hand. Just a delight to see.

Beautiful...but TOO much of a good thing | ||

I am a big Larson Bros. fan, but playing a 19" guitar is way too physically demanding/uncomfortable for me...and I'm 6' tall with long arms.
Still I would love to strum it a few times and channel my inner Freddie Green for a while.

The f-holes have normal, pedestrian binding--no pearl.True, but in the spirit of David's point, it's still quite rare for an archtop F-hole guitar to have pearl inlays anywhere on the body. I recall that in the '90's John Monteleone built an archtop for Michael Katz that had 45-style body inlays (maybe even of double width), but I don't remember seeing another besides this Larson.
