Monday night, 5/18, I was fortunate to be in a cozy audience of about 300, waiting for Roseanne Cash and her husband, John Leventhal, to perform a short set
for this private gathering. I was at a dinner table, one back from the small stage, and was disappointed to see that the only guitar on stage was NOT the
Martin Roseanne Cash Signature OM-28M, but rather a Collings OM. "Another Martin artist playing someone else's guitar", I thought.
Then Ms. Cash came on stage, alone, and said she would do one song for us before asking her husband to join her on guitar. (So, it was HIS guitar, not
hers--VINDICATED!)
She then picked up the Collings, and started fishing in her jacket pocket and said, out loud, "Oh shoot--no pick". She asked her hubby if he had
one, and he said "No". (I shortly found out why he didn't--he is a masterful fingerstyle player!) At that moment I figured "why
not"...and I stood up and said "Roseanne--I have one", and walked up and offered her a choice of medium or light, both of which I always have in
my pocket.
Needless to say--she was most grateful, and the audience, about 20% of whom I knew personally, roared with laughter and approval! (Many thought it was a
"set-up" of some kind. After all, who the heck carries multiple guitar picks around with him to a dinner meeting?!)
The ironic thing is that I was scheduled to receive an award the next day for "Quality Improvement Initiatives", and had been receiving kudos from
colleagues in advance of that event. Well, for the next two days, I must have had 100 people approach me and congratulate me on....rescuing Roseanne Cash!
She only used it on that one song, then turned the guitar playing over to John (really an extremely skillful player), while she sang five or six
songs. It was my first live experience with this very talented lady, and I will be sure to catch a full concert at the next opportunity, as well as purchase
one or more of her CD's. She is also quite funny and has a great rapport with her audience. She hooked me!
P.S. Yes, I reclaimed the pick!
