The bridge is not original. The leftover slot is not for a through saddle. Also, the neck profile has been reduced with a machine sander. The Shallers suck
too. At least the goofy tailpiece only left one screw hole. The finish is indeed over-sprayed. It looks like it's peeling up from the original finish in
some places. Yes, it does look like the original finish, at least in some places, but the top was probably sanded down. Is the pick guard original? It
doesn't look like the one on my guitar, which is a pretty close cousin of this guitar. With an ebony fretboard and bridge, this guitar should be pretty
much to '39 specs. In other words, it's probably a great one.

Is the pick guard original? It doesn't look like the one on my guitar, which is a pretty close cousin of this guitar.The pickguard appears original. It is the 'orangey red' material seen on Martins from mid-1939 until 1942. The bridge is not original. The leftover slot is not for a through saddle. I cannot say for certain that the bridge is replaced, since it has been sanded so thin that the original through slot would have been removed. The footprint does not appear to be oversize. the top was probably sanded down.I don't see any evidence of sanding on the top, just overspray. John |

Thanks for the clarification. My guitar dates from mid-'39, so I guess the change in pick guard happened right after mine was made. The sanded down neck
might be the only real problem with this guitar. It might still be close to the correct profile though. It's hard to tell from the photos. The fretboard
extension looks very over sanded. The soft roll that should be at the end of the fretboard is almost completely gone.

I looked at the photo of the sanded neck again. It can't be too sanded because it still has some capo marks visible. At least the depth of the neck profile
is pretty close to original. I was thinking about that patented bridge and tail piece system. This auction is probably the height of it's fame. The metal
parts are probably destined to live in a box on a shelf in the repair shop of an esteemed luthier.

Seller apparently pulled sale... I'm guessing at the last minute. I was all poised to bid to win. Anyone have any clues that they're willing to
disclose about what happened?

It looks like eBay pulled the auction for some reason. Anyone remember the seller's ID? Thrift Store Guitars or something like that?

What happened? | ||
Seller apparently pulled sale... I'm guessing at the last minute. I was all poised to bid to win. Anyone have any clues that they're willing to disclose about what happened?I would guess the same thing that always happens on eBay. And lately it's a trend. Someone contacts the seller with a sizable amount of money to purchase the item, they remove the item from eBay so now they don't have to pay eBay fees etc. Then the seller and buyer walk off happy into the sunset leaving the rest of us confused and pissed off |
