Other than the local get togethers, The Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, KS is the only big festival I've been to, therefore, it's my favorite.

Walnut Valley festival in Winfield ks is a fav. Starvy Creek bluegrass Festival is now my favorite #1.
Everyone should go to Winfield just once. It is awesome! Just not enough Bluegrass for me now. I'm just a rolling stone, down the lost highway. Martin D18VS, Recording King RD 227 Frodo lives! |

The Strawberry Music Festival. Right outside Yosemite. It's a four day/night camping music festival that I've been going to 23 years, missing a few.

Very difficult choice for me. They all have something that makes me stop and think fondly of them. But these are high on my list:
What gets me down on a festival? Militant, officious organizers. Sardine packing. Unusual rules (like, no RV awnings out; and no, you can't camp next to your friend, you camp where we tell you to camp). Repeated instances of crime in the camping area. Using "scrip" instead of plain old cash. Unfriendly cliques.

I'll second PastorHarry's pick of Uncle Dave Macon Days. I'll also add the Tennessee Valley Old Time Fiddlers Convention in Athens, AL (Oct.).
Modest admission, great jamming, and good competitions.

To go along with the original Indiana choices, Northern Indiana Bluegrass Association's festival in Kendallville, IN is a killer jamming festival. I'll
be there Memorial Weekend.
The home of Bluegrass is wherever you're playing it.

Galax, VA, in the 2nd week of August is a great competitor's festival with a great balance of bluegrass and old-time music. I'm guessing that around
8-10,000 folks attend.
Nothing Fancy puts on a pretty nice festival about 2 hours north of Galax in a small town called Buena Vista at the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains. I think that one takes place around the middle of September... Rhonda Vincent has headlined the last few years and always puts on a great and entertaining show. ~ Burr

I like the ones mentioned by the OP, plus a bunch more. The one down in Jeckyll Island, GA New Year's Weekend every year is a lot of fun. For OT music,
nothing beats Clifftop in WV.
The one I have the most fond and nostalgic memories of was the old Dahlonega BG festival in Lumpkin County, GA. I grew up going to that festival. It was where I did my first serious jamming, and also where I got to see (and hangout with) Bill Monroe and some of the other first-generation BG icons. |

grasser, I was at the Kendallville festival one year. There was a bad storm and we left after a couple bands. Seemed like a great festival though and we'll
probably go again.

Kendallvile is an outstanding festival for pickers. I go to a lot of festivals and can't think of one I like better. Been going there for years. Rarely
visit the stage area - I go to pick. Expect I'll see the grasser there in a few days.

Pastorharry - I know Jim Holland quite well, picked with him this week. He is an accomplished oldtime musician.
